Just to point out there's nothing new ... from the Devizes and Wiltshire Gazette, Thursday, 10 September 1863 which didn't have an online edition in those days so I can't offer you a link  :(

I wonder what the Kennet and Avon Canal would have quoted for carrying grain.

GWR bought  the canal in 1852 and raised the tolls, I guess this was to remove any competition.
