Yes, that's a police car. No, it wasn't on an emergency. Yes, the police have issued a statement: they are "sorry and ashamed."

(Do we have a dedicated thread for this type of stuff?)

Edit to change that incredibly long URL to something our server understands! - grahame

Not that I could find, but we do now.

Some of the other grouped threads:
http://www.passenger.chat/11558 Annoying / amusing use of completely irrelevant stock photos to illustrate press articles
http://www.passenger.chat/11526 Railway bridges struck by road vehicles - merged topic, ongoing discussion
http://www.passenger.chat/6748 Various 'open-top bus conversion' incidents, usually involving railway bridges
http://www.passenger.chat/7427 Another open top bus to add to the First fleet?

If you search for level crossing collision (http://www.firstgreatwestern.info/search.html?search=level_crossing%25collision), you'll find a sadly very long list - a snippet:
15th Dec 2017   Six children killed in collision between train and school bus in France - 14 Dec 2017
29th Nov 2017   Morlanwelz Incident in Belgium 27 November 2017
14th Nov 2017   Collision at Frognal Farm user worked level crossing, Kent - 23 Oct 2017
13th Sep 2017   Dangerous occurrence at Broad Oak level crossing near Canterbury, Kent, 29/6/17
31st Jul 2017   Incident at Abergavenny (28/07/2017)
24th Apr 2017   Tram overturns in Croydon - 7 killed, 51 injured - 9 Nov 2016
14th Mar 2017   Man injured as train hits tractor at level crossing - Thetford, Norfolk, 10 April 2016

Thanks for sorting out the image url, Grahame. I'm neither ashamed nor embarrassed, because it seemed to be working, but I am grateful!

No problem ... these things happen very occasionally with a mixture of caching (where your machine stores a picture locally rather than keep requesting it) and server security (where the server will only supply the picture if it's requested directly or from within certain domains).

Another one...

Amazingly, neither the lorry nor train driver were injured. The lorry cab is on the other side of the tankers, detached from its trailer, presumably by the impact. The HGV driver had driven straight through the level crossing barriers before the train collided with the lorry; he was breathalyzed and found to be several times over the drink-drive limit (not just over the limit but actually drunk).
