Title: Where was Phil on this day in various years.
Post by: PhilWakely on April 29, 2019, 15:30:37
This morning (29/04/19) Facebook was kind enough to remind me of where I was 'on this day' during three of Phil's Global Madventures over the last few years. So, I was kind of hoping you might like to remind me where I was on this day in ..............

2012
(https://drive.google.com/uc?id=1x42pUTlekcYBsMSdqrKwT4IyLO6rVd4s)

2013
(https://drive.google.com/uc?id=1FBCaALWI3-P5pSbeXqPEnoHHCIELR60G)

2018
(https://drive.google.com/uc?id=1ERjEPQF4Dhv307IbIUJdRt6BR-R03Piv)

Only one correct guess each in the first 24 hours (if it lasts that long!)

In 2013, I believe you may have been at Cass, partaking of their scenic railroad

It certainly looks like it, but sadly not. Whilst you are on the correct continent, you are on the wrong side.

The first (2012) looks like an ex-soviet state. Russia or Ukraine?

2013 looks to be on a North American lumber railroad. The loco's needed high tractive effort and adhesion so had vertical cylinders driving horizontal shafts similar to those on GWR railbuses, so each axle was motored (if you'll forgive the term).

Haven't a clue otherwise!

GWA's Adelaide-to-Darwin service, with freight terminals in Darwin, Katherine and Tennant Creek and also has access to terminals in Adelaide and Alice Springs.
Beyond that I could only guess!

"2018 Can you be a bit more specific with the location?"

Yes. I can. It is a large island  in the Southern hemisphere bounded by the Indian Ocean, the Southern Ocean, The Tasman sea and. . . . . ::)

It is at the last named place on your list - a town called Alice :)

This just leaves 2012, which is 'somewhere in Russia', just to narrow it down  ;)

Oddly, while I've never been to Krasoyarsk, I was in Vyazma for a few days once. Or rather being "hospitably accommodated" in the party social club out on the by-pass, the town being quarantined due to a Cholera outbreak starting from Odessa. That was way back 1970, when ... but that really is a long story.

This site suggests that, although of the the Krasnoyarsk Railway, it is installed at Ilanskaya station.

Как на трудно догадаться по надписи, Эм-ка с номером 730-73 Красноярской железной дороги установлена на станции Иланская.

Happy to be corrected  :-[  When you've just spent three days and two nights in a Trans-Siberian 'Standard Class' compartment on the top shelf, places seem to blend together and my notes were not particularly good.
