Title: And where on 1st June??
Post by: grahame on June 01, 2019, 21:27:56
While some of you were charity specialising up and down in the west, I had a meeting in far far away.  A couple of pictures taken before and after the meeting - but where are they?

I've no idea on the locations but the artwork in the second one (particularly the right hand piece) looks very Masonic/Illuminati.

I wonder if Professor Robert Langdon was nearby?!  :P

Yes - the second one is Middlesborough.    The day was a trip of two halves - with a significant meeting in York between them that was the initial purpose of me being up in these parts.  First half of the trip / morning picture remains to be identified;  after my meeting, I took in the TransPennine Express up to Middlesbrough before heading back to Darlington where I've based myself.  Some further pictures from later in the day ...

--- 2 x York, 7 x Middlesborough, 1 x Darlington ---

The transporter bridge is amazing, was there a couple of years ago after visiting Darlington railway museum.

Funny that - since everyone else gets the spelling of Middlesbrough wrong, I though Graham might get it right by accident ...

I bet quite a few get caught out by the regular use of “Boro” as shorthand...

Yes.  Somewhat sickly, but at least lacking in bready stuff.   An acquired taste which I have not acquired ... I mentioned it to Lisa on Skype last night in that way, and she says that's in the same way she has not acquired the taste for Cornish pasties!

Sadly, it was closed when I was there.  Ah - somewhere to go back to!

Would anyone care to tell me where the first picture is ... shouldn't be too hard

I'm torn by that last sentence. I like the sentiment express but.
NOT acquired the taste for pasties! Insult  ;D :'(
How could you NOT develop a love of (Cornish) pasties  ::)

Alternatively you can go to a closer one in Newport.  That is open, although the gondola is currently not working, not sure how long for. It's 276 steps to the top, and windy up there.  I decided that was about 200 steps too many for me.

No-one guessing the first picture?   Here's the previous stop, and inside the train!

Saturday morning, remember ...

My first thought would be Brigg, but the train looks too full.  Otherwise somewhere on the York - Harrogate line

First picture is indeed Brigg ... follow up was Kirton Lindsey.  The majority of people on the train were going to the seaside for the day, but at least six got off on at Gainsborough Central and off at Bring.  I undertstand that they are Saturday regulars on family visits - a short train ride is far better than over 2 hours by bus, zigzagging via Scunthorpe.

Also to note - lots of positive feedback about the hourly Sheffield train now running to Gainsborough Central to reverse - people love it compared to Gainsborough Lea Road for most of the town.

Saturday train should have been 2 cars, I understand ... train manager said he knew it would be packed if run with a 153 but that was all that was available.   Great fun getting a wheelchair on at Brigg, with the space already occupied by wheelchairs.

Message for wider readership .... it may be Saturday only but it's blooming well used.  How about other days??

More images from yesterday morning.

Thinking back, when I caught it 3 years ago ago it was a 4 car pacer about half full in the front set where I was travelling.  That would easily translate to a rather full Cl153.

Brigg - now there’s a station that wouldn’t win any prizes in a “best forecourt competition”.  Odd how the approach road stops a few yards short of what seems a bit of a wasteland...

Ever get that feeling of déjà vu?

Hadn't planned on walking through the Middlesbrough station underpass, but I needed to find a cashpoint after discovering the Transporter Bridge tolls and visitor experience were cash only.

Incidentally, while I remembered the murals from grahame's post I didn't look at said post before I took my photo. It looks like I stood in the exactly the same place and got nearly the same angle and the same focal length. Total fluke.
