Title: Stations with inappropriate names
Post by: grahame on June 07, 2019, 21:56:50
Perhaps we have been there before ... but I always chuckle at "Earley", especially when people are going to arrive one late there ...

From  the Reading Chronicle (https://www.readingchronicle.co.uk/news/17692160.passengers-are-affecting-travelling-between-wokingham-and-reading-at-winnersh-triangle-and-early/)

Quote
RAIL passengers are being left stranded at stations today due to signalling problem between Reading and Wokingham.

Since 9pm yesterday, no trains have been stopping at Winnersh Triangle and Earley due to a signalling problem on the railway lines.

Commuters have had to travel direct to their stops and then use a replacement bus to get to their destination.

Jane Lee, spokesman at South Western Railway, said: "The problem has been affecting passengers since half past nine travelling towards Reading from Wokingham.

Flowery Field, anyone??

There's a few slightly amusing three letter codes for stations:

ASS
BOG
POO
WEE

The Reading Early Learning Centre used to be on Broad Street, but has now closed. (I think there's still one round the back of the station). I never did find the Earley Reading Learning Centre, though.

There used to be a "Reading reading centre" attached to the university ... people (including my ex - that's how long ago it was) used to go there in their / her role as a student of leaning and teaching youngster how to read.  May still be there for all I know ...

There used to be two stations in the village of Fairlie, on the Largs line in Scotland. Down at the bottom of the village was "Fairlie Pier", for the ferry to Millport. Up at the top of the village was "Fairlie High".

I used to think Brightside was inappropriate for the gloomiest, most heavily industrialised part of Sheffield.

I don't know Brightside.   But I do know Sunnyside.   A run out from Glasgow on an early cloudless morning to do a day's work in Coatbridge.  Walk across to the other platform and get a wonderful freshly mad breakfast bap in what it a wonderful old station building before walking down and through the park, past the sinkhole and plug, to do a day's work with one of the most remarkable people I have come across in my IT work ...

There was indeed - my father was connected with the running of it.

It doesn't have a station now, but the very mention of the Chard Meat Company always made me chuckle.

When Portishead gets its station, visitors to the town may be a little puzzled that the lowest street in the town is called High St, and frequently floods, whilst the highest road in the town is Down Road. The road leading to this is called Lower Down Road, which prompted a first time visitor to ask me 'is there a Higher Up road ?...which kept me laughing for the rest of the week!

From the opening paragraph on the Wikipedea entry:

Three Cocks Junction railway station (colloquially as Lucky Man Junction)[4] was a station in Three Cocks, Powys, Wales. The station closed in 1962.[3] The station had a signal box.

It apparently was the cause of considerable levity to some but I am lost as to the reason why!

If we were to extend this to airport localities, I would offer Lulsgate Bottom, as a malady brought on by eating too many budget airline curries.

Lulsgate Bottom? The future moniker for Nailsea and Backwell Station if it's to be part of the proposed airport rail link?

From the Daily Record (https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/gang-attack-claim-schoolboy-taken-21524738)

Quote
Locals say a 13-year-old boy was set upon by a gang of older teenagers at Sunnyside railway station which police later sealed off.

A young man taken to hospital after an incident in Coatbridge is believed to have been attacked by a group of youths.

Local sources have said the victim is aged 13 and was left in a serious condition when he was set upon near the town’s Sunnyside railway station.

Police said they were called after the boy was found “unconscious”.

A massive cordon has been thrown around the area which centres on Gartsherrie Road at Lamberton’s Engineering.

ScotRail were forced to stop services at the station as there was no access for passengers due to the police cordon.

A local businessman said: “At about 4.30pm there were three males who attacked a 13-year-old boy.

“They quite severely beat him up.

“They were older than the boy, maybe 16 or 17.

“I’ve heard this from onlookers and some of the staff from the train who were clearing up at the time.

“The boys had just come off the train.

An interesting town is Coatbridge ... this popped up on my news feed a few minutes ago. Coatbridge is one of those unlikely places I spend quite a bit of time ...

And now I'm reminded of "The Bristol Song" written by Adge Cutler of Wurzels fame. Amongst thelines I can remember:

There's no food in the Feeder, you'll be out of luck
And you won't find hens in Henbury, and all The Downs is up.

Perhaps station related:

And all the girls in Horfield - are quite respectable really...

Don't be silly; Coatbridge is nowhere near Bury St Edmunds!
