Title: 14th July 2019 - Travel by Train with Confidence
Post by: grahame on June 21, 2019, 08:06:32
For Sunday 14th July 2019

Live in Melksham?
Never used the train?
A little nervous about doing so on your own for the first time?

Travel by Train with Confidence - an escorted trip to help people break their duck and try the train.

http://www.mrug.org.uk/confidence.pdf

Possibly a candidate for "inappropriate images" ... I selected an image of a random station on the network that's not Melksham with the thought that it's somewhere people may wish to travel by train.

Putting together information on the journey and Weymouth for next Sunday.

I have been unable to track down a current Heart of Wessex line guide and in the absence of that I have thrown together something a bit more tuned ...

Next Sunday the “Dorset Moon” is at the Nothe Fort for the weekend
https://dorsetmoon.com/weymouth/
Marion and I went to see it at Sherborne Abbey today. Well worth a visit but it will be very busy.
On its own the Nothe Fort is well worth the visit.
If you do the Roswell Trail then go forward to cross the Ferrybridge and rejoin the track bed to Portland. Billy Winters cafe/bar allows coffee with a view of the harbour.
Also take some time to explore the harbour side on you way to the Nothe

Also the very popular Dorset Seafood Festival:

This is located around the harbour area.

Currently the weather for next weekend is looking pretty good.

I will admit to having been far from confident that GWR will actually be able to run the TransWits and Heart of Wessex trains that our "Travel by Train with Confidence" today makes use of.  And my fingers remain crossed - however, thus far the four out of 13 trains cancelled on the line through Melksham to NOT include the 09:47 to Westbury, nor the 19:53 to Swindon.   Looking forward to a nice day at the seaside!

I was also keeping a close eye and suitable appendages remain crossed.

The 09:50 train from Melksham left with 45 passengers (just 6 on, 9 off, 54/15 ).  We have been more marketing the idea than selling the trip as the reliability of this service has been a bit of an embarrassment.

Yep ... for the trip, all 4 trains wanted ARE running ... 09:30 ish Swindon to Westbury, and 19:41 Westbury to Cheltenham Spa via Swindon on the TransWilts section, 10:10 Westbury to Weymouth and 17:56 Weymouth back to Westbury too.

Today has been planned as a marketing rather than a sales exercise - although we want people to travel by train with confidence, we in the Melksham Rail User Group lack confidence that the trains will run robustly enough on a Sunday - even when no engineering works are planned  that will effect them - to host a large party. A real shame because this year it was supposed to be so much better ...

Return train called at Melksham at 19:57 ... arrived with 42 passengers, 7 off and 3 on ... 45/10 ... doing incredibly well for a day with 31% (4 out of 13) services cancelled.  Did any other station have a higher cancellation rate today or was Melksham once again chosen to be top of the *hit parade?
