There is only one 'wrong type' of slug: I once had the misfortune of wasting many hours failing to learn about thermodynamics because my lecturer thought it much better to spend his and our time telling us about a system of units which in his opinion was far superior to SI,  based on the 'slug'. I'm not making it up! Details are here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slug_(unit)

I thought such farces didn’t happen on foreign railway networks.

The name "slug" was coined before 1900 by British physicist Arthur Mason Worthington,
There's a slug in my Worthington! Do they really serve Worthington's on Japanese trains? ::)

I don't know about Japan - but there has been at least one on the loose in my house over the last week or so - and so far I haven't found it!
