Title: The cost of diversion via Melksham ...

The cost of diversion via Melksham ...  4 minutes

Quote
15:07 Newquay to London Paddington due 20:37
15:07 Newquay to London Paddington due 20:37 will be diverted between Westbury and Reading.
It will no longer call at Pewsey and Newbury.
It will be delayed due to the diversion and is expected to be 4 minutes late.
This is due to a broken down train.

Another example last night talked of a train being 3 minutes late because of diversion.

Blue sky thinking ... looking at threads that are looking not at the next direct awards but at the next decades ... storing up experience of the art of the possible.

Paddington - Reading - Theale - Thatcham - Newbury - Kintbury - Hungerford - Bedwyn - Pewsey - Devizes - Westbury same end to end time as Paddington - Reading - Didcot - Swindon - Royal Wootton Bassett - Chippenham - Melksham - Trowbridge - Westbury

The service lost another 10 minutes between Westbury and Reading. Was 12 late leaving Westbury and 22 late arriving at Reading and Paddington.

Real time trains "looses" diverted trans over alternative routes ... and from that I have no idea about  the path it took / progress from Westbury to Reading.  It would be an amazing  stoke of luck if what had become an extra train on that line at a "random" time didn't suffer bathing / signalling checks.

You could try Traksy maps they seem to use the train describer feed. I was using it the other day to follow some diverted trains.

From today

Quote
09:00 Penzance to London Paddington due 14:01 will be diverted between Westbury and Reading.

It will call additionally at Westbury and Swindon.

It is being delayed between Westbury and Reading and is now expected to be 34 minutes late.

This is due to a points failure.

Unfortunately is caused delays to two other services

2M09 - 12:49 Swindon to Frome was already 14 minutes but lost another 10 waiting for the single line
1C13 - 12:00 London Paddington to Bristol Temple Meads was 7 minutes late but lost 9 more trapped behind the Frome service

That is ... not unexpected. And unless I'm mistaken, 1A18 which came up through Corsham and passed Thingley ahead of diverted 1A82 will have caused a signal check (at least) to the diverted train while it carries out Chippenham station duties.

Interesting idea could be a through train Paddington to Paddington in both directions  with reversal at Westbury
