The Train

OkeRail Forum in partnership with Great Western Railway and Dartmoor Railway are planning to run an express passenger train from Okehampton Station to Weymouth on Saturday 14th September 2019.

The train will depart from Okehampton at 08.15 and arrive back at 19.30 giving almost 5 hours in Weymouth.

The outbound train will stop at Dorchester West to drop off passengers but will not pick up on the return journey. Passengers visiting Dorchester must make their own way from Dorchester South to Weymouth to board the return train to Okehampton which leaves at 16.26. There are two trains per hour on this route with a journey time of about 10 mins.

Our Fares

The fares are £37.00 return standard class with children at half price (£18.50) and First Class tickets £52.50 adult / £26.25 child.

A coach link from Marhamchurch, Bude, Stratton and Holsworthy to Okehampton Station will be provided at a subsidised fare of £5.00 return and free for those under 16. The coach will be part funded from funds raised by ‘Connect Bude’ from raffles at events held during this year.

I'd  like  to  go!

If you would like to join us on this day out to this famous Dorset seaside resort please add your name and contact details to the expressions of interest list held at Bude TIC indicating if you wish to use the coach link.

Alternatively, send us a message with your details, indicating your requirements.

Bookings will open in early August and you will be sent details to enable you to book your seats online.

See Visit Dorset's Weymouth page for more information.

Our Aim

This is a not for profit venture aimed at promoting the benefits of good connections for Bude, Holsworthy and the surrounding area when the rail service returns to Okehampton on a regular daily basis.

Super trip on the OkeRail Special yesterday.  Excellent run in both directions, out via Taunton and Westbury, back via Yeovil and Honiton.  Thanks to all who made it possible and who ensured all went well on the day from OkeRail and GWR.  Big team of GWR volunteers on board.

A particularly shout out to Cllr Michael Ireland, Vice Chair of the OkeRail Forum who was key to getting the train in the first place.  He sadly suffered a stroke a month ago but came along yesterday and he looked and sounded as well as anyone could hope for under the circumstances.  The train wouldn't have happened without him and he was determined to be on it if at all possible.  I'm really pleased it was.

Is that the last time we'll be able to travel in a GWR Mk III First Class HST coach on its home railway? I suspect it might be.  Probably the last HST to Westbury, Weymouth and on the Honiton route for some time too.

I got off at Dorchester West and after an hour in the town, got the X51 bus to Bridport.  What a lovely town Bridport is!   Another hour there wandering around the market stalls and bookshops (tip - Wild & Homeless Books in South St has a really great stock of secondhand railway books) and it was the X53 to Weymouth.  40 mins there before the train left to come back.  Really good day out.

I was sad enough to chase it yesterday. 2+5 HST with 43188 and 43194 (newly named 'Okehampton Castle'). Photted the ECS enroute to Okehampton at Sampford Courtenay; the outward leg at Crediton, approaching Maiden Newton and passing the site of Upwey Wishing Well Halt and the return leg at Bincombe Tunnel and Pinhoe.....

Bridport is a special place.
The High Street has many local businesses which are adapting to market changes; one has been doing so since 1515 (AD not time) and the local Brewery dates back to 1794.
Last Saturday saw the Hat Festival, a celebration of the headgear, where everybody going to town has their own version (https://www.bridportnews.co.uk/news/17889912.hat-tastic-photos-bridport-hat-festival-2019/).
Today saw the end of this year’s Artists’ Open Studio event, now  in its 20th year.
