Title: Plymouth to Saltash and Liskeard services - how they have changes
Post by: grahame on August 26, 2019, 12:15:12
From the March 1967 to May 1968 timetable.   We have, I think, a big increase in Plymouth to Liskeard trains, but significant reductions at most intermediate stations, perhaps signalling the end of rail commenting into the Plymouth and Devonport area.  Having had the joy of travelling on the 06:00 from Penzance on a schooldays it was reduced to 2 cars, I am aware that current use is made of the now very limited service.

The Tamar road bridge opening in October 1961 led to immediate free-flowing traffic between the two counties, and the intensive rail service was no longer needed.
However the present rail service is well used by commuters, schoolchildren, and shoppers.
I was at Plymouth station earlier this afternoon and a fair number came off a eastbound service.

Given the 1960s WR really hated local services, it's amazing to see that the Saltash shuttles lasted ten years after the Tamar Road Bridge.  They must have still been carrying good numbers to the end - there was no attempt at closure, at least, as far as I know.
