Title: Travelogue observations - 12th September 2019 - Sidney Leslie Godwin
Post by: grahame on September 12, 2019, 23:43:17
Sidney Leslie Godwin was born in Melksham on September 9th 1910.  And with 7 other members of the Godwin family he perished in the northern Atlantic when the ship they were travelling on - the RMS Titanic - sank after hitting an iceberg on 15th April 1912.

On one of our "sea days" on the Aurora, we passed around 40 miles from where the Titanic sank, and today Lisa and I visited the graveyard in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where around 100 of the victims were laid to rest.

Identification of the deceased was not as advanced over 100 years ago, and Sidney was buried "name unknown" - the grave of the unknown child, only identified in recent years and now lying amongst fellow passengers and crew outside of Halifax, a 30 minute bus ride from where we were berthed earlier today.
