Title: Wrightbus in administration.
Post by: chuffed on September 25, 2019, 18:22:41
A story in that esteemed organ, the BEP, that First are running substandard single deckers from their reserve fleet in Manchester in Bristol, because their new order of 20 double deckers are delayed. With the demise of Wrightbus, one wonders if this is the source of the delay ?

I think the Wrightbus situation is described at https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-49818156 (but thinks that's a UK only link) ... also noted from Facebook a comment that new bus orders are down 20% so suspect the whole market is in a bit of turmoil

The current Wrightbus products are known for poor quality, and poor sales. Some of the Brighton and Hove Streetdeck are on their 3rd engine and less than 4 years old!
Look at the Streetdeck for example, 2014-2018 just 400 models were sold.
The ADL Enviro 400MMC sold 400 models in its first year of construction in 2015, let alone what it’s sold since.
Don’t even get started on the street lite versus the E200mmc!

So you can't make a living running buses, nor building them. I wonder where this is going?

You can make a living building them. Wrightbus made considerable charity donations to a charity run by one of its owners. Let’s just say the donation was considerably greater than the loss in the last year!

From The BBC (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-49996934)

Quote
The owner of the Wrightbus factory has said he has not been able to reach a deal to sell it to a new owner.

Jeff Wright said that the sticking point had been farmland he does not consider part of the factory site.

In a statement released on Thursday, bidder Jo Bamford said he had met the asking price for the Wrightbus factory and the land.

"Mr Wright has since refused this offer and has now asked for a significantly higher sum of money," added Mr Bamford.

Sad news ... watching / listening to BBC Northern Ireland, I understand that the bus building business and the land / factory were separate elements and the sale of the bus building business (which employed lots of people) had been agreed.  They "just" needed somewhere to be able to carry on building them.

Quote
The Wrightbus premises are owned separately from the manufacturing business and held in a company called Whirlwind Property Two, which is not part of the Wright group and is therefore not under the control of the administrator.

The property company is controlled by Mr Wright, the former owner of Wrightbus.

The Bamford family I believe have history of buying land for development so I guess the farm land was wanted for non factory related reasons

And a day later ... from the BBC (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-50013959):
Quote
Wrightbus sale deal reached 'in principle'

A deal has been reached in principle for the sale of Wrightbus.

Bidder Jo Bamford said agreement had been reached with "the Wright family for the Wrightbus factory and land".

"We are still to conclude a deal with the administrators but are pleased to report this important step in the right direction.
