Much disruption today caused by a fatality between Moreton-in-Marsh and Evesham

The Evesham Journal reports that the sad incident occurred at 1040 this morning at Clayfield Barn Level Crossing.  This is a matter of a few hundred yards (in a straight line) from my home.  I was working at home but heard nothing of it.

The Journal also reports that services were restored at around 1330

Such unhappy news.  My thoughts go to all involved, friends and family of the deceased, the driver and other traincrew, and the Emergency and other services involved.  It's a bit chilling to think that my own daughter, a Paramedic/ECP was working on the ambos this morning and could have been called to this.  They never know what their next job is going to be.

For the second day running, the 05:11 Worcester Shrub Hill to Paddington service was delayed at Oxford due to problems trying (and failing) to join two 5-car units. Today, it was terminated at Reading "due to a problem with the train (MY)."

No doubt a signaller reporting error.  All points on the Cotswold Line still rely on manual reports, so there is the occasional headcode or time mix-up when an entry is made.  This would have been the arrival time for the following 1P22, so entered into TRUST/TOPS as 1P20 by mistake.

Nothing on JourneyCheck but Realtime Trains showing the 12:50 Paddington to Worcester Shrub Hill as "cancelled between Oxford and Worcester Shrub Hill due to a problem with the electrified line (I1)". Not entirely clear why as it appeared to arrive at Oxford on time.

Seems to have been a late call judging by this Tweet:

Quote
@GWRHelp cancelled the train with 3 minutes notice. Staff have no idea what's going on. Pretty difficult to keep 2 small children entertained for an hour on platform...

and looks like they're going to need more than an hour's entertainment as the following 13:50 Paddington to Great Malvern train has just departed Reading 21 minutes late!

It looks like this will be the norm for the rest of the week - the empty stock can't use the route via Newport and there isn't enough capacity via Ledbury:
Quote
06:43 Hereford to London Paddington due 09:37 will be started from Worcester Shrub Hill.
It will no longer call at Hereford, Ledbury, Colwall, Great Malvern, Malvern Link and Worcester Foregate Street.
This is due to heavy rain flooding the railway.
Last Updated:18/02/2020 06:28

Question - could they send out the stock for both the 05:23 and the 06:43 coupled together? Are you allowed 18-coach trains? Would it fit into the loop at Ledbury?

And today's cosy journey is
Quote
Facilities on the 17:58 London Paddington to Worcester Foregate Street due 20:07.

It wouldn't fit in to the passing loop at Ledbury - a 9-car only just fits in on the down direction, and there's a whole host of other reasons why it would be a very awkward thing to do.  Whilst 18-car operation is possible, it would only be used for rescuing a failed train in practice, as has happened a few times.

And today's cosy journey is
Quote
Facilities on the 17:58 London Paddington to Worcester Foregate Street due 20:07.

That train would generally be OK with a 5-car anyway being first stop Oxford - it only ever really needed to be a full length train (HST in those days) when it stopped at Maidenhead and Reading.  That's by-the-by though as it looks like 9-car 802107 is allocated to it, so JourneyCheck is wrong.

05:50 London Paddington to Great Malvern due 08:34 was terminated at Charlbury.
It will no longer call at Kingham, Moreton-In-Marsh, Honeybourne, Evesham, Pershore, Worcester Shrub Hill, Worcester Foregate Street, Malvern Link and Great Malvern.

06:53 Worcester Foregate Street to Didcot Parkway due 08:41 will be terminated at Evesham.
It will no longer call at Honeybourne, Moreton-In-Marsh, Kingham, Shipton, Ascott-Under-Wychwood, Charlbury, Finstock, Combe, Hanborough, Oxford, Radley and Didcot Parkway.

It will be delayed due to the diversion and is expected to be 31 minutes late.

An additional train service has been planned to operate as shown 08:35 Evesham to Oxford due 09:39.

Nothing on JourneyCheck to suggest that the terminated 05:50 PAD:GMV might be converted into an additional service to make up for the Oxford/London bound cancellations at the moment.

The Cotswold line service at the moment is totally unreliable. The number of cancellations is shockingly high and even when trains do run the punctuality is terrible.  So, yet again, I'm driving to Oxford Parkway where the Chiltern line does what a train service is supposed to do and the trains turn up and run pretty much to time.  I'd sooner not drive but I just have no choice. GWR just can't be relied upon to get me to my destination.

According to RTT, the earliest trains (the 5:11 from Shrub Hill and the 04:48 from Hereford) ran normally, though they had to wait at Oxford for the overnight Didcot - Reading engineering to be finished.

The 05:23 from Hereford seems to be running normally.

But then the two 06:43s, one from Shrub Hill and one from Hereford, were sent round via Stroud.

The halts train, the 06:53 from Foregate Street, was cancelled at Evesham at 07:18 - but now seems to have restarted from there at 08:23.

Unfortunately, the GWR app & website said it was restarting at 0835, not 0823 (and still says that now), so I got to Shipton 5 mins before it was due there (0906 - the platform display agreed) but 5 minutes after it actually stopped there according to the workmen on the platform. There's really not much point running an extra train if you're going to run it 10 minutes or so before you're advertising it. If I'd known, I'd have gone via Kingham or Charlbury, but I've now missed two trains from there thanks to the incorrect info.

It has been delayed at Oxford and is now 20 minutes late.

Nothing on JourneyCheck to suggest that the terminated 05:50 PAD:GMV might be converted into an additional service to make up for the Oxford/London bound cancellations at the moment.

Realtime Trains suggests that a service departed from Charlbury at 07:47 and ran to Oxford.

It will no longer call at Hanborough, Charlbury, Kingham, Moreton-In-Marsh, Honeybourne, Evesham, Pershore, Worcester Shrub Hill and Worcester Foregate Street.
This is due to a speed restriction over defective track.
Last Updated:21/02/2020 15:13

This service actually arrived at Oxford just two minutes late so passengers waiting on the platform, as well as those turfed off the train, were frustrated and confused. The underlying issue seems to have been crew displacement leading to a replacement driver who was unable to take the train any further.

I went to Worcester yesterday and the return journey back here to Bath, when the services were supposed to be returning back to normal, was a nightmare. My 2 hour journey became 5 and a half hours, largely due to the problems caused by this signalling issue, but later on by another signalling problem at Gloucester. There were many different problems during the journey, including information systems all being wrong or misleading, but the worst of all was the rail replacement bus service we had, which I will post about separately on the Rights and Redress thread.

While my journey was bad enough, and ruined my day, it was far worse for some of the other passengers. One man, who didn't speak English that well, was trying to get to Paddington from Worcester. Either he was put onto the replacement bus to Cheltenham or mistakenly found himself on it (from what I could see, it was never clear from the platform screens whether the Paddington train was running or not) but then found himself on the Penzance train from Cheltenham, as the platform screen at Cheltenham showed the Paddington train arriving first when it was in fact a Penzance train (and prior to that had shown the Penzance train arriving first when the first train to arrive was the Maesteg train). The Penzance train then stopped between Cheltenham and Gloucester for over half an hour, and the last I saw of him was his panic as he tried to find a staff member on the train. None ever showed up on the whole journey.

No problem. It gave me a chance to realise what you have to put up with on such a regular basis, and to see the effects of the flooding in Worcester, which was dramatic.

I overheard one man who said his journey to Worcester (from I think just Cheltenham) had been delayed by one and three quarters hours. He was just going there for a work meeting which he had missed, had popped into the office to sort out matters and was heading back to his home office. He was one of the ones who made the decision to call his own taxi to get back, which as it turned out was wise.

Out of all the excuses GWR uses to cancel trains the 'shortage of train crew' is the most frustrating. It's the job of management to run an efficient railway which means making sure there are crew for the trains. That's just basic.  It's not like it happens rarely. It's a daily occurrence somewhere on the network.  It's no good having comfortable trains and an improved timetable if the trains don't actually turn up. Management really should be ashamed.

Yes, all three were formed of 5-car units tonight.  The middle one of those three is probably better as a 5-car to be honest, but the first one especially really needs to be a 9-car.  The planned set for the 18:58 Hereford was used instead for the 19:04 Penzance for some reason.

I thought GW is awash with IETs with the revised timetable.

Yes ... but I suspect a last minute problem - lots of them around but too many tucked up in bed for the weekend and no spare hanging around at Paddington.   By starting out at Reading, there was an extra 30 minutes to get a train ready and being Reading that happened to be a 3 car turbo.

I have an update (received yesterday) from GWR on IET maintenance - not had a chance to post it with appropriate visibility as the section "above the fold" is overfull today.

All the 800s had to be taken out of service for inspection due to a crack on a deflector plate found on several units.  They should, hopefully, be back in service by Monday following remedial work.

I've not been near the trains since March so no idea how many are actually being disrupted but there's a few things going on (or not) this afternoon:

Quote
13:18 Hereford to London Paddington due 16:24 will be diverted between Worcester Shrub Hill and Reading.
It will no longer call at Worcestershire Parkway Hl, Pershore, Evesham, Honeybourne, Moreton-In-Marsh, Kingham, Charlbury, Hanborough and Oxford.
It has been previously delayed, will be further delayed at Reading and is expected to be 40 minutes late.
This is due to a points failure.

14:50 London Paddington to Worcester Foregate Street due 17:12 was terminated at Moreton-In-Marsh.
It will no longer call at Honeybourne, Evesham, Pershore, Worcestershire Parkway Hl, Worcester Shrub Hill and Worcester Foregate Street.
It has been delayed at Slough and is now 5 minutes late.
This is due to a fault on this train.

15:18 Worcester Foregate Street to London Paddington due 17:24 has been cancelled.
This is due to a points failure.

16:30 Great Malvern to London Paddington due 19:28 will be started from Oxford.
It will no longer call at Great Malvern, Malvern Link, Worcester Foregate Street, Worcester Shrub Hill, Worcestershire Parkway, Pershore, Evesham, Honeybourne, Moreton-In-Marsh, Kingham, Charlbury and Hanborough.
This is due to a points failure.

17:57 Worcester Foregate Street to London Paddington due 20:24 will be cancelled.
This is due to a fault on this train.

The Paddington to Worcester service wasn't much revised during the peak of the lockdown, as several others were.  Every time I checked on RealTime Trains, the service appeared to be running flawlessly.  Many days of "right time railway".

Now with other services being repopulated with trains that had been withdrawn,  the more usual delays to Worcester line services will resume, no doubt

Anyone know what happened last evening on the OWW?

A bridge strike is given as attribution for delays and cancellations

1658 PAD 1W33 arrived at Charlbury on-time at 1806 but stayed there until 1937 (87 late)
1734 PAD 1W03 cancelled beyond Oxford
1935 GMV 1P42 cancelled beyond Worcester
1758 PAD 1W34 cancelled beyond Oxford

and

1946 GMV 1P44 started at Worcester Shrub Hill, 6 late, because of late arrival of incoming service

I'm not sure of loadings these day.  I guess he service gap would have inconvenienced far fewer passengers than it would have done in the olden days of six months ago

A number of cancellations and short-workings this morning.  Reason is stated to be, sadly, "person hit by a train".

Looking at Real Time Trains, it would seem that the unfortunate incident happened between Didcot and Oxford, at about 0700.

Always such a sorrow, to learn of these incidents, whatever the reasons and whatever the outcome (both of which are unknown to me).  My thoughts are with all who have been involved

Thanks for the information.  I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels a shudder of horror when learning of these events.

06:43 Hereford to London Paddington due 09:37 has been previously delayed, has been further delayed at Evesham and is now 31 minutes late.
This is due to a tree blocking the railway earlier today.

Causing a fair bit of disruption through the evening peak and beyond:

Quote
Cancellations to services between Evesham and Pershore

Due to a tree blocking the railway between Evesham and Pershore all lines are blocked.

Train services running through these stations may be cancelled, delayed or revised. Disruption is expected until 22:00 25/08.

Clearly this thread isn't really active now but three evening peak cancellations in a row is worth mentioning:

Quote
17:03 Didcot Parkway to Moreton-In-Marsh due 18:09 will be cancelled.
This is due to a fault on this train.

16:58 London Paddington to Great Malvern due 19:24 will be cancelled.
This is due to a shortage of train crew.

17:34 London Paddington to Hereford due 20:25 will be cancelled.
This is due to a shortage of train crew.

22:50 London Paddington to Worcestershire Parkway Hl due 01:06
Facilities on the 22:50 London Paddington to Worcestershire Parkway high level due 01:06.
Will be formed of 5 coaches instead of 9.

Recording this one partly because it's causing an issue with the train amendment graphic - will sort out after Tuesday Club (at least mature a snapshot of the feed to debut later).  This marvellous platform already come up sixth 3 names - raw, with "hl" added and with "High Level" added and it's fun associating them through the software layers!
