Title: Moving Poole Station
Post by: grahame on March 31, 2020, 07:03:41
One from last December which just sprang up for some reason - from the Bournemouth Echo (https://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/18108547.millions-pounds-spent-moving-pooles-railway-station/)

Quote
Millions of pounds could be spent moving Poole's railway station

POOLE railway station could be moved as part of an “ambitious” project aimed at improving the town centre.

Millions of pounds are set to be allocated by BCP Council's cabinet with approval for plans to be drawn-up expected to be given at Friday’s meeting of its cabinet.

Poole People councillor Mark Howell, the portfolio holder for regeneration, described the scheme as a “once in a lifetime opportunity”.

“For Poole to continue to attract footfall and external investment we must resolve the severance issues associated with Poole level crossing," he said.

A report published ahead of the meeting proposes moving the station to the east of High Street to allow the level crossing to be closed.

I am not sure how moving the station to the East of the High Street allows the level crossing to be closed.  Unless you close the line to Weymouth! Can anyone explain?

Your picture Grahame looks like North America with a Cape Dutch style building - a stock 'Poole' photo?

The Bournemouth Ech now has a very different picture, One that might be Poole, UK. I don't know because I have never been there.

An Image from WikiPedia with attribution as required just underneath it.  Don't blame the Bournemouth Echo for being misleading - blame me for a piece of humour that backfired.

No, it didn't. Some fell on stony ground...

If I remember correctly, you couldn’t do anything to Poole station that could make it worse.

The photo reminds me of a childhood picture book about a little house in the countryside which then got encroached by the suburbs and ended up moving in a similar way. I don't remember the title but it definitely wasn't set in Poole.

I've had a look at the various plans for Poole - surprisingly many of them - and didn't find any coherent explanation. Either one or both of the changes (move the station and close the crossing with a new bridge or deck for pedestrians) gets referred to, but nothing links them. So I can only guess that putting both in one development proposal is seen as a way of getting more support than each would on its own.

Melbourne in Australia has a very big programme to remove loads of level crossings.

Some lines will be going over the road and some lines be going over the rail line.

Simple solution is build a tunnel under the rail line.
