Title: Visitors to London - attractions at the stations [DotD 2.4.2020]
Post by: grahame on April 02, 2020, 09:33:18
A number of London termini have statues and memorials - some very much serious that make us stop and think, others frivolous and fun.    Imagine your cousin from Calgary and her husband and two teenage children are in London for a week - which statuses / memorials would you suggest they make a point of taking a look at as they pass through?

Please post if you have anything else you would rank in the same league as the above ...

My choices were limited by not knowing enough about the ones I didn't vote for to confidently vote for them.
My "other" vote is for the John Betjeman statue at St Pancras.

Edit spoll check error.

Not so much data (I will leave members to research online in their spare time and tell us) ... but pictures

The something else is -

They should visit the 3 large Victorian train sheds, St Pancras, Kings Cross and Paddington.  I would also add London Bridge and Blackfriars

They should - I was contemplating (and your comment encourages me) further sets of votes, suggestions and recommendations over coming weeks - started small with "statues and memorials".

Yes, splendid idea. It gives the opportunity to include George Gilbert Scott's neo gothic masterpiece, the frontage at St Pancras.

I feel a little sorry for Waterloo. It's magnificent frontage suffers from the fact that there is nowhere where you can step back to properly appreciate it.

"Bump" ... for weekend visitors to the Coffee Shop ... our poll on which attractions at our London termini you would recommend your cousin for Calgary take time to see is STILL OPEN.   Please vote - it closes before next weekend.

For early visitors to this poll, the thread now includes pictures of all the "attractions" we are talking about to help you decide which way(s) to vote.

Would highlight the GWR war memorial on platform 1 of Paddington station. Impressive statue by Jagger.

Also the list at Waterloo is within the arch which I thought was part of the memorial.

And the winners are ...

Code:
Paddington Bear, Paddington	- 9 (24.3%)
The Meeting Place, St Pancras - 9 (24.3%)
Eleanor Cross, Charing Cross - 4 (10.8%)
Any station war memorial - 4 (10.8%)
Kindertransport, Liverpool St. - 3 (8.1%)
Something else (please post) - 3 (8.1%)
Platform 9.75, Kings Cross - 2 (5.4%)

None of the above - 3 (8.1%)

20 voters ... 37 votes cast.  Joint Winners - The Meeting Place and Paddington Bear.  Very surprised at platform 9 and three quarters getting the golden raspberry - guess we don't have too many Harry Potter fans here?

I'll run a poll on station architecture in due course - very busy on the forum this morning so I'll do that another day.

Off topic - I have used a picture of the statue to paint a thousand words on "Welcoming Refugees and sending aid" - for Ukraine - at http://grahamellis.uk/blog431.html .  I have strong views on how this country is handling (or not) the welcoming of refugees, and how its seems to be less than good in oiling the wheel of getting donations through.   These are personal views, and I appreciate that my view are far from universal.

I feel SLIGHTLY uneasy at calling the statue at Liverpool street an "attraction"
Something to admire, and perhaps to stand beside for a moment of solemn remembering, but "attraction" ?
