Title: Maidenhead to Marlow - timetable and user group from 1986/7
Post by: grahame on April 08, 2020, 06:57:23
Perhaps one of the least changed services since 1986/1987?  But then its big change had been in 1970, when they key section from Bourne End to High Wycombe was closed.

It can’t have been long after that when a Sunday service was (re-)introduced.   I remember travelling on the first one - but not the year.

My May 1986 timetable has a Sunday service listed, so was it summer only back then?  It was hourly from 09:35 until 19:35 from Maidenhead.

No dates given, but from the Marlow Maidenhead Passengers Association (https://www.mmpa.org.uk/history.html) website

Quote
However, after continuous pressure a Sunday service has been restored to the branch in stages: first summer only, then with a trial Christmas period and finally an all year round service.

The last Maidenhead to Marlow service on weekdays was at 22:14 then, and is now just before midnight.  With the addition of a faster train from London to connect into it, it means the last departure through from Paddington to Marlow is now 23:15 as opposed to a very early 21:34 as it was then.  Trains start earlier too.

I bet there's no Though trains from Bourne End to Paddington any more.

Well as Paddington is now all Electric, (except the Night Sleeper when it returns, and the First and last train to from Greenford, I know there isn't a through service.

Through trains from both Henley and Bourne End to London were reduced in 2017 and I think it was the following year they were finally all withdrawn.

Just to be pedantic there is the occasional diesel train during the day when an IET is not able to run on electric although that happened much less before the timetable reduction than it used to.

Sadly that was very much a backward step.

Looking the other way - back in time, not facilities - from 1967.  But yet there would appear to be through trains to Paddington, but not back from Paddington.

Yes, and the inbound trains arrive at 8:26 and 8:59 ... not exactly workmen's trains. Which is presumably why here aren't the matching journey-back-home services: the gentlemen concerned spread their returns over a much longer period, from mid-afternoon to after dinner.
