Title: Quiz ... if you know Melksham. Picture to look at if you don't
Post by: grahame on May 31, 2020, 13:28:50
It's two months since I have been on public transport or been out of Melksham.  But I have been walking around and taking photos and we have lot of lovely places within a couple of miles.  If you live in Melksham, how much do you know your town?  Pictures from the last 2 weeks ... in a quiz at http://www.mrug.org.uk/qj20.html . Please try it.  If you don't live in Melksham, please just guess ... even for those who live in Melksham,I expect this to be difficult.

There are several hundred picture in the quiz ... each time you play you'll be offered a new set.  Keep playing to keep seeing places ... and enjoy!   You are perfectly safe to visit all these place virtually.

7/15 which I'm fairly pleased with considering I've only had a walk round some of Melksham once. Might have another go for comparison.

Edit: 12/15 for 2nd try but 2 were from the previous attempt and one was a bit of a giveaway anyway.

And back down to earth with a bump with 6/15 on 3rd attempt.

Never mind - bit o'fun. The randomiser is such that you could come up with just about any mix of pictures ... some folks find the residential streets hard to work out, others the fields.   Local dog walkers seem to be doing well!   If you're not from the town, 12 is exceptional and even a half of that shows significant knowledge!

It does get a bit addictive though, having another bash now.

Well - I managed 8 out of 15 even though it's years since I have done anything other than drive past the town on the A350 - must have picked something up as a forum member for about two years!

This has gotten ridiculous, I'm seeking help.  Clearly too much time on my hands yesterday (or nowt much on TV) so I kept trying to see how good I could get. 14/15 a few times but no top score although this has now turned into a memory game test as, after enough attempts,  a lot of the locations are repeating themselves.  Still some lucky/educated guesses are needed.  I might need another fix in a mo.

There is a library of 267 pictures. Sounds like you've spent even longer working them out than I did uploading them and entering one correct and 3 wrong (but feasible) alternatives.

If you are looking for withdrawal help ... try http://www.mrug.org.uk/roller.html which I have been working on with the same data ... a random image from the set every 15 seconds, and labelled with the real location.

Looks like a typical score is 10 or 11 ... so with 14 you are doing well.  Judging by comments on Facebook, it's the local people who have dogs who are doing best. While the page logs scores, I have nothing in place to identify who made which submission, so there's no scientific confirmation of what the comments suggest.

I certainly have learnt a lot about the town and just how much there is to see around there.  You might have hit on an idea that the local tourist people may want to use to interest future visitors, when visitors become a thing again!

It's very useful in generating local interest and keeping the Melksham Rail User Group name in front of people.  The beauty is that people aren't really competing against each other, and most people do well enough to get a good feeling - and also get a usually positive view of the town.

So far ...

233 unique households have visited and 118 different households submitted answers
236 completed and submitted for marking 223 of which had less that 4 questions missed

Average score 10.34 on full submissions
average time taken: 278 seconds
median time taken: 207 seconds

Number of people getting each score from 0 to 15
[0, 0, 0, 1, 3, 5, 8, 7, 25, 27, 36, 37, 29, 24, 17, 4]
So one poor soul just got 3 right ... 37 scores of 11 ... just 4 perfect.

Update, 16th June 2020

506 different visitors have asked for sets of pictures to identify and some have asked for more than one set - so 763 quizes have been set of which 358 were completed and submitted for marking. The fastest submission was just 96 seconds, and the median was 208 seconds. Looks like one person went to sleep while they were doing it and took 2.5 hours (or perhaps they were resaerching).

One person only got 3 right; 5 knew (or managed to guess) all 15 in their set. The most-scored number correct was 11, from 59 responses.

The quiz remains online and open for you at http://www.mrug.org.uk/qj20.html
