Title: ITV west news reporting of a "FULL UP" app
Post by: infoman on June 04, 2020, 08:39:43
The app will give details of how full bus's are if your waiting for your bus.

I believe First Kernow's app currently provides this information - or rather how many people are currently on the bus.
Done in conjunction with the ticket machine on board.
From what I've seen, the iOS app is already displaying that information.  The android update is in the process of updating.

How does that help poor old passengers waiting at an isolated, or exposed bus stop, and when the next service is perhaps two hours later......

....or the bus is showing full, so you walk away and then 99% of the bus passengers get off at your stop.....

There was a similar story about trains, or at least about those with passenger-weighing facilities (GTR 700s and 717s) in E&T (https://eandt.theiet.org/content/articles/2020/06/weight-sensors-to-keep-trains-at-safe-capacity/?utm_source=Adestra&utm_campaign=New%20EandT%20News%20-%20Automation%20FINAL%20-%20MEMBER&utm_medium=Newsletters%20-%20E%26T%20News&utm_content=E%26T%20News%20-%20Members&utm_term=842960).

Weight sensors to keep trains at ‘safe’ capacity
By E&T editorial staff    Published Tuesday, June 2, 2020

The operator of Thameslink has integrated sensors onto its trains to assist with safe social distancing in line with Covid-19 guidance outlined by the UK government.

Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) – operator of the Thameslink and Great Northern lines – is using technology supplied by Siemens Mobility to monitor the number of passengers on its trains, as well as supporting service operations and timetable planning to ensure commuters are keeping at the 2m-distance rule.

The technology uses train loading data based on weight and is currently being used on the Class 700 Thameslink and Class 717 Great Northern Moorgate trains operated by GTR.

“In line with government advice, our message remains to avoid public transport if you can, and the rush hour if you can’t. Anyone travelling should wear a face covering and wash or sanitise their hands thoroughly before and after travel,” said Steve White, chief operating officer at GTR. “We are seeking a partnership with our customers where we will run as many services as possible but encourage customers to apply social distancing whenever possible.”

According to its developers, data gathered by the train is fed into Siemens Mobility’s cloud-based Advanced Passenger Loading reporting. Here, the data provides both immediate information to the train control teams, as well as the ability to retrospectively analyse different routes to support ongoing scheduling and timetabling.

The report flags services where passenger loading is above 10 per cent – providing an early indicator of busier trains, and above 15 per cent – at which point safe social distancing becomes more challenging.

There's no mention of the information going out to passengers via apps or otherwise, though I'm sure I've heard that discussed before. The text makes it sound like a new feature added by Siemens, but of course it's really all as-built equipment - they've just tweaked the software so the scale reads "full" when the train as almost empty.

...and if we all have to wear masks does it matter anyway? or is wearing masks actually not much use? As usual the government announcement hasn't made things particularly clear.

Information suggests that the masks protect others from us, not so much us from others ... but then every infection transfer has two points - a source and a destination, and I suppose it doesn't matter at which end of that transfer the filtration happens.  Like it doesn't matter whether tickets are checked as you get on or off a train.

Is there, perhaps, some reverse psychology here? With just one in eight of us saying we'll use the train / bus once restrictions are lifted unless we feel it is made safer, is one of the intents of the mask rule to make us feel happier and return somewhat to public transport once more none-essential places are open?

I can't see this being done by weighing the passengers remotely using the wi-fi thingy.

I think it will done by the driver counting passengers on and off which can be done using a mobile phone type thing.

I recall a little while arriving for the 376 to Glastonbury and on the board it said 40 minutes wait

I know it was a half hour service and thought to my self I will wait ten minutes.

Lo and behold the bus arrives at the stop.

Said to driver your not on the departure screen.

Driver said I know I have switched the tracker off.

It’s done by ticket machine, every ticket sold adds a plus one. On the main screen on ticketer there is a button that says 1 alight. Press it for each person getting off.

On first buses there is no way to switch the tracker off without unplugging the ticket machine, however if there is a machine fault it might not track!

Swindon Buses seem to be doing it a slightly different way - by asking passengers to submit details on the bus they are travelling on.

Last week I caught a bus from a terminus.  The app said there was no information.  I was one of two people on board and filled in the online form.  The status immediately updated to "Quiet".

Not as reliable as using ticket machine data but an interesting way of doing it if you can get passengers to take part.

Everyone getting on gets a ticket, as always. This adds a plus one. There is a button for minus 1

This is getting far too technical for me.
