Poma is leading the consortium, and will supply and install the transport systems, including 122 cars, supporting towers and station equipment. The ropeway is described by the project partners as a highly sustainable form of urban transport, offering ?near silent? operation and no emissions at the point of use. The technology has been selected because of the pressing need to improve local transport in the Mongolian capital; the city?s population has grown from 580 000 in 1990 to 1∙5 million today. The city also has a number of significant physical features including the trans-Mongolian railway and the Tuul-Gol river, which makes aerial transport an attractive option, and the partners believe that a cableway can be delivered in a shorter timeframe than other options. Should such a system be considered for any of our UK cities, especially in the South West sector. Would a system fro m Oxford Station to Gloucester Green and on to Carfax and Cowley Road be helpful? How about Temple Meads Station - Castle Green - Watershed - Clifton Triangle - Clifton Down Station? Title: Re: Ulaanbaatar's yurt settlements to be served by cable car Post by: Bmblbzzz on November 09, 2020, 10:39:56 I think that's really interesting on several grounds: that they've chosen cable car rather than, say, bus; that it's purpose is explicitly to connect the semi-temporary self-settled suburbs; that it's financed by the French government.
I wonder about service frequency and fare structure. As for something similar in this country, what about terrain? Looking at the photo, Ulaanbaatar seems to have a flat central area surrounded by hills or mountains, and we generally associate cable cars with mountainous regions, where they would seem to be well suited to bypassing valleys and generally 'levelling out' the terrain. Ulaanbaatar also looks to have very low-rise architecture ? almost all single-storey judging from the photo. And I wonder what existing public transport it has? Might a flatter landscape with taller buildings require higher cables to clear the rooftops and then have to drop down low for stations? The Green Party on Oxford City Council back in 2018 wanted various cable car routes to be looked at including from existing Park and Rides, to Cumnor, and to the John Radcliffe Hospital. The proposals for a Bristol cable car re-emerge every few years (there's been mention of it on this forum before, somewhere) but so far nothing more seems to have happened. Early ideas were to cross the docks along the bridgeless stretch between the Centre and the Cumberland basin (currently only crossed by ferry). Later proposals expanded the route up to Clifton and in the opposite direction, to Temple Meads. What little reported response there has been from Bristol City Council to this can be best described as lukewarm and it's been some time now since I've come across any further discussion of the matter. It does however refuse to completely go away. Hammersmith Bridge is ♫ falling down, falling down ♫ and the politicians are passing the buck. TfL has been told to pay for repairs as part of the bailout conditions and a replacement ferry service which would start in a few months.
