Title: Another advent picture quiz, December 16th

Some railway related pictures, all in GB. Each letter is in a location (town etc), with a railway feature (A has 4, and C has 2).  We?re looking for the town and if possible, the ?feature?(s).

I think I know six ... and I look at picture "M" and wonder if I should ask if I may edit a copy for a "spot the difference" quiz over the next week or so.   Love all the stuff - feel I should know where it is, but can't place it yet. Going to be "duh - of COURSE" when someone identifies it, I'm sure!

A: Isle of Man - childhood holiday destination. 1: Isle of Man Railway terminus at Douglas, 2: Snaefell summit - Snaelfell Mountain Railway, 3: Peel - Manx Heritage Transport Museum near site of old station, and 4: Laxey on the Laxey Mines Railway showing tunnel under Douglas - Ramsey road. Just spotted that No. 1 is our family engine as well - always our favourite. BTW, the Manx might object to being included in GB!  :)

C yes
M yes, a fascinating place, and yes Grahame, please use as you wish, I may have other similar ones
A yes, all 4, unfortunately the museum at Peel was closed on that day, but we did have good walk from Douglas for a couple of km along the route to St Johns/Peel. 5 day pass for all transport and museums on the island very good value was about 6 years ago. Also interesting route by plane from Gloucester!
E yes, well done. it was a coincidence, in evening after seeing the work on Russell in the workshops on WHHR, we walked down the route of the line where a loco was being offloaded.

I'm impressed by all the identifications, particularly of E and M.

"J" is a Sittingbourne and Kemsley locomotive but NOT on the Sittingbourne and Kemsley - I am guessing that the picture might be Alston.

I remember giving a C Shell course for Shell at Sittingbourne, and finding it a bit of an unfortunate tongue twister. The Sittingbourne and Kemsey is a line I really want to get back to some year soon ... when we can travel again.  And - looking forward - heard this morning of the first of our rail friends being invited in for his Coronavirus vaccination first shot ... first steps towards being able to perhaps travel next summer and see these places again.

J Yes, at Alston station. I can't confirm where the loco is from so I take it that you are correct with a Sittingbourne loco

N - Bennerley Viaduct

Title: Re: Another advent picture quiz, December 16th
Post by: Reginald25 on December 16, 2020, 13:42:47
N - Yes, Bennerley, near Nottingham. Amazing viaduct, worth a look if you are in the area. Didn't get taken down due to the metalwork being incompatible with torch cutting.
Now part of a possible predestrian/cycle route.

J Yes, at Alston station. I can't confirm where the loco is from so I take it that you are correct with a Sittingbourne loco

Thanks ... further follow up (I have egg on my face) suggests this loco did not come from / run at Sittingbourne; a reasonable well spread industrial style / design, I suspect; the link to Kent being just through a reminder of trips in my use to the newly started heritage passenger operation there.

Is P the undercroft of Glasgow Central station?  It's a long shot - I just recall seeing a TV programme earlier this year that mentioned occasional guided tours of that location.

Q is Haverthwaite on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway.

Title: Re: Another advent picture quiz, December 16th
Post by: Reginald25 on December 17, 2020, 06:57:06
Q yes, Haverthwaite, about 25 years ago!
H yes, Crewe (not York). the station was shown to help identify it. The event was the Great Gathering of steam at Crewe Works 2005
L yes, Millers Dale. Amazing that a second viaduct was built there just to accomodate the capacity. An excellent teashop on site now!
P no, not Glasgow but yes an undercroft, much further South and in GWR territory

Well done L, H and Q

Still to do   BF GI KP R

B and O are in the Northern part of England
G and I are north of the M4
R is north of the M4 and in Wales
P and K are definitely in the GWR area

Suggest the one answer limit now removed, so answer as many as you can do.

P yes There is an amazing under ground area under the station. Another interesting area is under the old terminal station. I went on an organised tour of both, must be 8 or 9 years ago now. We were told that it was used as a route to bus replacement buses at that time, don't know whether that is still the case. The wartime training area has been left as it was then.

Yes quite so,it is still used as a route for access to Rail replacement bus services ,only during times of major disruptions to services.

I haven't seen D mentioned yet which is the Great Orme Tramway in Llandudno. Tram No. 7 is on the summit section and the fuzzy inside picture is the halfway winding house. The tramway being in two halves with passengers walking between the two.

My apologies I missed D on the outstanding list.
And YES it is the tramway and the winding house. Llandudno station is also one that I like!

That leaves:
Still to do   BF GK R

B and O are in the Northern part of England
F is in the Midlands
G is north of the M4

Got it now O is the Wensleydale Railway  Embsay to Bolton Abbey

Title: Re: Another advent picture quiz, December 16th
Post by: Reginald25 on December 17, 2020, 16:42:59
O Yes, well done. It's Bolton Abbey station on the Embasy and Bolton Abbey Steam railway (not the Wensleydale which is near Northallerton).
When we visited, we were shown in the boxes at Embasy and Bolton Abbey by very friendly but knowledgable volunteers.
Les well known than the Worth Valley Railway it's still a good one.

Hopefully B will be identified soon. Its further North than Embasy at a very famous heritage site with several railways not interconnected and starts with B! The railways have all been built from scratch there, they aren't authentic routes. Other guided transport as well. I've practically identified it now.
Something in that should give a clue to F as well.

Yes I ment Wharfedale I will loose my Yorkshire Passport if I carry on like this.
See the last posting. The Wharfedale line goes to Ilkley. In the pre closure days, this ran on to Skipton. The Embasy line is part of the bit between Ilkley and Skipton that got closed.
I think you can keep your passport.

B Yes at last. Beamish, perhaps not the most obvious view!

That leaves still to do    F G and  R

F is in the Midlands, and starts with F
G is north of the M4, and a loose linkage with GWSR
R is north of the M4 and in Wales. Its adjacent to a line which is now a cycleway.

G Yes   A great little hands-on museum. It was quite a walk from Winchcombe station but worth it. Surprisingly it had no connection with the GWSR that I'm aware of.

F  Yes   Foxfield, the clue was in the carriages, which they are proud of. The photo was taken on a gala day in 2019. A small heritage line which I was anxious to tick off the list! The line extends beyond the limit of passenger operation to a mine, that's one for a future outing.

Well done.

Just R to go now.
There is a cycleway running from Cymmer Afan (which has a disused viaduct) down the valley, enough said for now.

That clue points me towards the South Wales Miners Museum (https://www.south-wales-miners-museum.co.uk/about-the-museum) and the picture looks like it might fit; no evidence against.  But all circumstantial - I am not seeing any pictures online showing the scene (and I have done some searches!)

Title: Re: Another advent picture quiz, December 16th
Post by: Reginald25 on December 18, 2020, 09:40:59
R yes It is the South Wales Mining Museum. There is some railway exhibits outside.
The museum is adjacent to the Afan Valley Railway path that runs from Cymmer. Going further east you get to the Rhondda Tunnel site (now filled in) qhich it is hoped will be reopened in th next few years as cycle way.

That completes all the photos in the 16th December quiz. Maybe some more next year.
