Title: Great British Railways
Post by: Red Squirrel on May 17, 2021, 13:18:45
According to usually reliable sources, the new body to oversee Britain's railways will be called... Great British Railways! What do members think of this name?

Designed both to appeal to the nostalgia of the "good old" BR days, and towards the Brave New Brexit Era.

Perhaps after 17 years it will change from Great British Railway to GB Rail, in the same way British Railways became British Rail?  ;)

Is the 'Great' an adjective or part of a Proper Noun ?

If the former, it sounds more like a TV programme hosted by Michael Portillo; If the latter, it should be "Great Britain's Railways".

Completely naff name if you ask me.

Just think how much worse it could get, especially if left to pressure from the press or the commentariat.

Anyone for UKRail? (pronounced Yukrail, obviously).
Or Brailways? (Though that works best if it coincides with all eyesight requirements for drivers being dropped.)
YouTrain? (Might be confused with Peloton, though.)

In the expectation of rotten tomatoes and bad eggs.

I think Boris & Co have largely devalued the name Great Britain, so I am not enthused by the prospect of Great British  anything. But there again I am almost certainly a minority faction.

Andrew Haines has already reintroduces Regions ................ British Railways or British Rail might be a bit unpalatable for the Government; Great Britain Railways fits in with the current Government Trumpisum of make Britain Grate again and their desire to use the Great Britain branding where ever possible

We will have Great Britain Railways this service is operated by our friends in the EU ...............  Abellio, Arriva, Trenitalia  ;D  ;D

British Rail will do me fine.  I'm fairly certain that most people will start shortening Great British Railways to British Rail soon enough anyway so why not call it so from the off and save on reprinting all that headed stationery?

Well at least they don’t need to come up with a new logo!

The Conservative-Brexit-UKIP parties and associated media have done such a thorough job in appropriating the expressions Great Britain/Great British, with all the deliberate play on the meaning of 'great', that these expressions have been reduced to right-wing slogans for me now. 'British', neutral and apolitical without the great, is fine.

Yes AIUI Great Britain originally meant including Scotland.

There's a serious rail-related point there of course - If the new Network Rail-created and controlled SRA Mark 2 puppet Great British Railways is responsible for dishing out concessions, and can intervene to "change timetables and even out services", will they be able to do this with ScotRail and Transport for Wales? After all, both Scotland and Wales are still allegedly part of "Great Britain".

And if "Great British Railways" wont be able to intervene in that way, then shouldn't a name variant of "English" be used instead?

And if it doesn't cover services devolved to London or other conurbations?

I feel Great or Greater London Railways would be more appropriate if Scotland and Wales aren’t included,, as that’s the only place in England according to the government and media.

View from Daily Mail (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9597693/British-Rail-Biggest-shake-train-network-three-decades.html)

Quote
British Rail is back... almost: Biggest shake-up of train network for three decades will see complex franchise system axed... and fares get cheaper
* Great British Railways will replace Network Rail to operate 20,000 miles of rail
* It will have powers to set most fares and timetables and issue contracts
* Grant Shapps said passengers had been failed by 'years of fragmentation'
* The reforms include flexible season tickets that will go on sale next month
* They will allow commuters to travel for eight days over a 28-day periods
