Title: HOT places to live / move to - escape to the country
Post by: grahame on May 21, 2021, 07:45:46
From my local paper (http://melkshamnews.com/2021/05/12/melksham-in-uk-top-10-for-selling-homes/)

Quote
MELKSHAM has been named as one of the 10 best places to sell homes in the UK.

The town’s appearance in the ‘hottest UK property market’ countdown comes as more homebuyers look to   escape to countryside and coastal areas – reflecting a trend for less-centralised living following the Covid-19 pandemic and a year of ‘staying at home’.

According to online real estate website, Rightmove, just under 78% of homes put on the market in Melksham this year have been sold – subject to contract – with an average asking price of £276,096. Melksham comes in at number 10 in Rightmove’s countdown with Cornish town Newquay topping the list.

“This is no surprise that buyers value all that the idyllic market town of Melksham has to offer,” said Amanda Andrews, residential sales manager at local estate agents, Kavanaghs.

Suggests to me the countryside living - but with connectivity to towns and cities - is where we are headed.  And for that we need a darned sight better that one train every 2.5 hours ... buses to the next big towns that end at 5 p.m and don't run at all on Sundays ...

As we move toward our later life Marion and I have looked at moving from the village into Bridport. The estate agent, in his monthly contact, advised us that currently houses in that town were selling in under a week, mainly as second homes for those escaping the city. Another estate agent had a notice in their window likewise saying that houses were selling rapidly.
I would expect that, if this continues, West Dorset will see the same problems in finding housing for the local population that other western counties have found.
However, it should bode well for the SWR lines through Dorchester and Crewkerne.

Not sure if they were moving to the country but I've had a couple of friends who have been told they can't even view houses until their current property is under offer.

Seems to be a seller's market at the moment. I'm not going to complain though as in the fortunate position of going to be selling in a few months with no chain.
