Title: Rail Rule book, Underground Map, Driving licenses and more
Post by: grahame on July 12, 2021, 07:04:35
During research yesterday (nothing but sport on the TV!) I came across  the Metadyne site (http://www.metadyne.co.uk/Research.htm) with some fascinating historical pieces

BR Rule books:
http://www.metadyne.co.uk/BR_Rules.html
http://www.metadyne.co.uk/pdf_files/RULE_MAIN_V4.pdf

History of the underground map:
http://www.metadyne.co.uk/UndMap.html
http://www.metadyne.co.uk/pdf_files/UndMap.pdf

An illustrated history of Driving Licences
http://www.metadyne.co.uk/DL.html
http://www.metadyne.co.uk/pdf_files/Driving%20Licences.pdf

Historical figures
http://www.metadyne.co.uk/D_ml_stations.html

And much more too.  Documents are clearly labelled "Copyright - not to be printed" and "Copyright - not to be distributed", but I have added them to our mirror index to that searches will send members to them where appropriate.

Indeed! If you search for "metadyne" on the forum, it finds that I cited a paper on the history of driving licences. I found that (as I guess Graham did) via a Google search, and at the time I didn't realise how much else was there - just that it looked like good reliable research.

If you do reach the site's web pages, you will see from the heading that the author of all this - Mike Horne - died last year, which it is very sad to hear. Of course that raises the question (as for many such personal sites) of how all this stuff can be kept available, whether or not the work is ever continued. The link with the London Reconnections site does look hopeful it that regard.

What a fascinating site!

Very sad to hear that the author has died. Had anyone here ever met him, or know anything about him?

Re underground maps, I'm fairly sure I heard a programme about their history on Radio 4 a couple of years ago. Maybe he was involved in that?

You might find something interesting in this article about Mike Horne, on the London Reconnections website last year:

There’s a Wikipedia page for him, which lists some of his books about LU lines.
