If routing via Oxford, I would suggest you split at Banbury.

My bid ... I would go for an anytime day return Melksham to Bromsgrove at £39.70, which can be used via Birmingham New Street under easement 700351.  Stopping short at New Steet and then a £5.40 fare off peak, anyTOC on to International.  Total cost £45.10 - out on the 06:36, back for 20:21, opportunity to try out the Rhubarb Loop. Could save a few pence more by getting a TOC specific ticket for the BHM to BHI trip. Change at Trowbridge and Gloucester in both directions.
