I was at number 10 the other day - I won't give it away - but goodness me doesn't it need some TLC.  Paint falling from the ceiling, floor surface not good in the wet - even a broom to tackle the cobwebs would be an improvement!

Sorry, 9 is most definitely not Taunton!

The only Taunton references are the bloke behind the camera. It being his home town. He also worked briefly, in his late teens, for the same company in both Taunton and this location. No fiver. :P

No. 1 has to be Shortlands ... blindingly obvious to anyone who - err - was brought up in the Bromley area, commuting through there or a daily basis, catching the 227 bus and sometimes walking past the spot where the picture was taken on his way up through the park to the High Street.   But then ... not everyone was brought up in that area  :D

Correct. And I can highly recommend the nearby Shortlands Tavern. But avoid a double Tanqueray No10 & Fever Tree tonic. Set me back £12.20! Ouch.

3. Looks to me like Catford Bridge.  I used to live 20 minutes walk from there.

Interesting fact about Catford Bridge.  It was featured in a Geoff Marshall video on YouTube as being one half a pair of stations between which it is not possible to buy a ticket - the other station in the pair is Catford.

The 227 bus brings back many memories for me, as it went past the house where I grew up and I often caught it as well. And yes, Shortlands was very obvious.

The 227 bus brings back memories for me as well.  Standing at the bus stop on the triangle at the northern end of Bromley High Street after visiting Medhurst's department store, waiting for a 47 for my journey back home to Catford, there were loads of 227s and yet so few of the 47s - it felt frustrating that Beckenham which I never visited had such a good service compared to Catford which was the centre of my world.  At the time I didn't think about the RFs (single-deckers) on the 227 being more expensive for London Transport to operate than the RTs (double-deckers) on the 47.  (The 227 had to be single-decker because of a low bridge.)  Ah nostalgia.

Ah, indeed, nostalgia ... arriving on the 227 from Chiselhurst Common, popping into J Lyons besides Medursts and then shopping in Caters, 227 back from outside and chaining there onto the 61 or 161A back home to Petts Wood. For changes to London, the novelty of taking the 1 rather than the 47 some times ... but to connect onto those we used to walk in Petts Wood to catch the 94 - further from home than the 61 or 161A, but then London trips by bus (often or Red Rover days or rail strike days) didn't involve carrying heavy groceries home.  Ah - them was the days.

Indeed. I lived at the other end of the route, on the borders of Beckenham and Penge, and still remember venturing along the whole route for the first time to explore Chislehurst Common, which was covered in deep snow on that day. It was a frequent service (I assume it still is) though only one in every 4 went beyond Penge to reach Crystal Palace. Maybe it was a mixture of its frequency and that it linked areas that were very different from each other which made it such an iconic route.

Waterloo East, from the clue, sounds right. But the walking route from Waterloo does not, as I recall it, have any right-angled turn, and it's a mostly timber structure. So I wonder, was that down below the platforms, on the way up from the street entrance?

Title: Re: Where were Finn and bignosemac, Autumn 2021?
Post by: paul7575 on October 10, 2021, 14:51:44
I think it’s the corner between the bridge and the ramp to the platforms B/C island.

There’s a number of different constructions, the ramps down to the platforms are timber roofed, the tubular sections across Waterloo Rd are relatively modern, but the bridge that crosses the three platforms is an older floor and walls with a more modern roof.  As Stuving notes it isn’t a 90° turn but I think the camera exaggerates the view.

Aerial view from Google:

And well done paul7755 for finding the precise location!

That's the quiz completed.
