Title: Severe disruption between Salisbury and Exeter, 21st October 2021
Post by: JayMac on October 21, 2021, 15:49:03
Following heavy rain overnight there have been several incidents affecting the line between Salisbury and Exeter today, 21st October 2021.

Flooding was reported at Gillingham this morning. There's been problems with lineside vegetation at Tisbury. And there's been a possible landslip between Chard Junction and Crewkerne.

All of this has led to numerous cancellations, effectively leaving many people at intermediate stations with no practical service. There has been no replacement road transport provided by SWR.

From SWR:

What's Going On:
Train services running through these stations may be cancelled, delayed by up to 90 minutes or revised. Disruption is expected until 17:00 21/10.

What We're Doing About It:
A band of strong winds and heavy rain moved across our network yesterday which resulted in parts of the railway being flooded between Exeter and Salisbury.

The line is currently blocked at Crewekerne whilst a safety inspection takes place.

Tickets are currently being accepted on the following services:
Great Western Railway services between Salisbury, Yeovil Pen Mill and Exeter St Davids via Westbury.

If you have a ticket for travel today between Exeter St David's and Salisbury on South Western Railway this can be used tomorrow (Friday 22 October).

To assist you with your journey your ticket will be accepted, at no extra cost to yourself, on the following services:
- Stagecoach bus routes 4, 4a, 9 and 9a between Exeter and Axminster via Honiton

For further information or onward travel advice please speak to a member of staff or use a station help point

We are very sorry for any delay that this may cause to your journey.

I've recently returned by bus to Templecombe from an appointment in Yeovil. Bus nearly full to Sherborne. The service into Yeovil this morning was 'full' on leaving Sherborne. Fortunately there were no further passengers waiting to board between Sherborne and Yeovil Bus Station.

One GWR service was diverted 'up The Mule' this morning, more in hope than expectation. 1A74 (0713 Paignton to Paddington). Delayed at Exeter St Davids for an hour, and again at Honiton for a similar length of time, it eventually arrived at Paddington 200 minutes late.

This landslip at #Chard had blocked the line between Crewkerne and Axminster. Although it looks minor, it could move if we run trains past it, and slide further. We’re working on a plan now

As of 8pm the line remains closed between Crewkerne and Axminster. Work will continue overnight to stabilise the slope and remove spoil.

It is really difficult to introduce this Special Edition of our Newsletter, because there appears absolutely nothing positive to report !

I hope it gives you an accurate view of just how awful things have become in recent weeks, both on our line and across the wider network.

The bedrock for our services – the timetable - has all but collapsed. It will therefore come as no surprise that we are focusing on Performance in this Newsletter.

Timetable performance on our line has become the worst in my memory, and in the light of the Williams/Shapps report, it no longer matters who is to blame, the fact is that the passenger experience is very poor. Many would-be rail travellers have tried the revised services and after a bad experience are simply saying “no thanks”. This is very damaging – if you upset an occasional or inexperienced traveller, they get the impression that railways are unreliable and won’t be back. We must face it, our line is in crisis.
