Title: Ticketing across Europe - a barrier to long distance / cross border travel?
Post by: grahame on November 20, 2021, 07:57:19
From euobserver (https://euobserver.com/investigations/153542)

Quote
There are 30 countries with their own national railway and ticketing and fare systems and a dozen or so independent train operators with their stand-alone ticketing systems. Buying a cross-border train trip can be a nightmare ....

And an argument over open train data ... interesting article and worth a full read ... hard to summarise other than to say "what a complex mess!"

True, but Deuche Bahn  website cuts through a great deal of transnational travel difficulties with trough booking at a discount prices.

The Man in Seat 61 is the classic resource for this* but that doesn't remove the problem, just helps those in the know navigate through it.

*In the English-speaking world.

SNCB (Belgian Railways) did OK for me getting tickets all the way to Groningen in the Netherlands back in February 2020. They have started sending me marketing emails again, but much as I might be tempted the Covid situation has discouraged me from checking  - try https://www.b-europe.com/EN
