Title: Advent Quiz - day 10 - Mind the Gap between December 2019 and December 2021
Post by: grahame on December 10, 2021, 05:26:55
A little different for our "Advent Quiz" ... much more serious! looking to help our local Railfuture branch to complete a survey for a "Mind the Gap" exercise comparing services as the were two years ago and now.

I have been asked for answers for five "key flows" and it's clear that the request is regional / long distance and on that basis, what are the five "key flows" in the Severnside area?  My suggestion would be:
A) Bristol to London (Paddington?  All?)
B) Bristol to Birmingham
C) Bristol to Southampton
D) Bristol to Exeter
E) Bristol to Cardiff

Please - can I ask members with knoweldge to take one of the above five or if you think another flow should be used, please add it in

1. Loss of frequency: Number of trains per hour between “A” and “B” for both peak and off peak December 2019 and December 2021

2. Loss of service duration: Removal of first and last trains and loss of service duration in 30 minute bands.

3. Increase in average journey duration: By how much have average journey times increased as a result of say removal of fast services, or insertion of extra stops to cover withdrawal of stopping services?

4. Loss of through journey opportunities. Number of through trains lost as a % of the December 2019 for the key route. Increase in journey time as a result of having to change trains.

5. Loss of on train facilities: Has there been any change in the provision of on-board catering, restrictions on cycle conveyance etc?

Do your best, please! under each of the five titles.  Add an appendix for extra comments.

Discussions welcome - I will look to correlate the data at the end of next week.

Thanks, folks!

Sorry, I don't think my knowledge is sufficient to provide a helpful answer (although when did Bristol to Cardiff/Southampton lose the 158s? you might be able to spin that as loss of facilities if you count interior doors to keep draughts out of the passenger saloon as a facility). However, "key flows in the Severnside area" sounds alot like "key flows within the Severnside area" which may or may not change the meaning of the question. Within Severnside you might want to add Severn Beach, consider the Portsmouth services only as far as Bath or Westbury, the Birmingham services as far as Cheltenham/Gloucester and lose the Paddington services from the discussion?
