9.  A wild guess.  Is this where the Minehead line - the West Somerset Railway - crosses a main road?  I only suggest this because there's a level crossing on that railway that has been discussed earlier this year.

Would you drink at a pub displaying a caution signal?  ;D

It’s possibly a reminder the pub sign train is on the wrong track…

10 (possibly) Cholsey & Wallingford from the Church Road bridge outside Cholsey (although I would have expected a large pylon or two in the background)

There's certainly a pylon in that view, so where did it go? Partly it's the reduced resolution to give 800 px across, but that's not all. I took a Google earth picture that matches and clearly shows the pylon against the sky, and reduced the resolution to match, at it's still visible (if fuzzy). And so is the OLE on the "big" railway, though I guess TonyN's picture could predate that. So I imagine the vanishing act must be down to the colour and contrast processing, in some way, plus a bit of JPEG compression trickery.

In the original picture I can just spot the pylon but it is amongst a tree.

The picture was taken in April when I was still using my old Sony E5 phone so about 5 years out of date.

See attached. I have enlarged the original image and circled the top of the pylon and a gantry on the railway. I am not sure if the gantry is OLE or a signal gantry.

The gantry above is at the end of the OLE wire run, hence the angled stays to hold it vertical. I think the wire run tensioners are even visible on Google satellite view.

Time for some clues to the remaining pictures

1.Largest village in England?

6.They could have been designing Trains or Tractors.

8.it's not really a pier.

11.A swift one could have been consumed here by clerics changing on their way to an annual conference.

That's not the same pylon! The one I was talking about is the next one to the right, which has no trees to hide behind. And more OLE should be visible further right within the same framing too.

I haven't been there for a while but picture 6  appears to me to have been taken inside The Draughtsman Alehouse at Doncaster.

11, The Station Hotel in Penrith
Correct

I always seem to go to places on dustbin day.
The pictures at Preston Penrith and Wigan where all taken the same day. I was trying out the new Transpennine 397s. With a much reduced timetable that ment I spent a lot of time in Preston instead of having time for lunch in Penrith, as originaly planned 18 months earlier.

That concludes this weeks quiz I will be back next Monday. Thanks for taking part.

9: Strand Road, Preston and the line leading into the docks and Ribble Steam Railway

Fifty odd years ago this crossing looked a lot different, no trees and starkly industrial with the railway disappearing into the dockland through large gates in an eight foot high corrugated iron fence with large warehouses behind one of which I think may still have borne the owner’s name in large fading letters: Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway.  There were no crossing lights either, just a man in a dark greatcoat and a red flag walking ahead of the train. It was an odd joint railway too between the North Union Railway (itself a joint company) and Preston Corporation as owners of the docks.
