Title: Dubbed the "most depressing place in the northern hemisphere"

'Dubbed the "most depressing place in the northern hemisphere"' - where am I talking about?

From Wiltshire Live (https://www.wiltshirelive.co.uk/news/wiltshire-news/town-near-wiltshire-ranked-among-6449257)

Described as the "kind of hell hole that only exists in the deepest realms of a dark fiction novel," [Redacted] has featured on the list before, becoming a popular target for scrutiny in this scathing survey.

The area has previously been roasted for having a population of "wannabe squaddies" and dubbed the "most depressing place in the northern hemisphere."

Reads like a case of looking at a few negative aspects of the town and exaggerating them to the Nth degree in order to create a news story.
Quite a few years ago, I used to visit a couple of recently married old friends there (who lived on the delightfully named "Love Lane ") and I have to say that, while I've been to places more to my liking, the town and surroundings were by no means unpleasant.

Another town which progress has passed by. Last time I went it appeared to be nothing but hairdressers/barbers and nail salons. Not sure how we support so many barbers when so many people have shaven heads.

Going back in history, I couldn't believe the number of hospitals it had.

I remember that at some point in the 1990's, Carterton was voted (by Daily Mail readers) as "possibly the ugliest town in England". Other military towns I can think of would probably also be high up on the list.

(for those that don't know it, Carterton neighbours RAF Brize Norton)

For any town to be rated worse than Swindon must be a real blow to its residents.

I love some of the descriptions in italics - especially Didcot - and even my own beloved Plymouth, which sneaked in at #48!

That describes about 9095% of UK towns !
