Title: Buses, trains, ferries. Where were Finn and I today, 26th January 2022?
Post by: JayMac on January 26, 2022, 17:11:12
Nothing too taxing to I think. More of a photoblog of various modes of transport the pup and I used today. Try to be precise with the guesses.

And just one guess each please for the first 24 hours.

1.Fareham Station, bridge over A27. paul7575

3. School Road level crossing, Fawley Branch, Hythe. bradshaw.

And finally. Is there a rhyme for Gulls like there is for Magpies? If so, what's 13? ;D (Hythe promenade, sorta guessed by grahame)

Your gulls look like stump.trade.shovels if "what three words" is precise enough for you.

13 is a baker's dozen, or half alphabet. At the seaside, the collective name for a lot of gulls is "a nuisance of gulls".

Pretty close with stump.trade.shovels. The 13 were actually lined up at atomic.tested.afford

I'll refrain from posting the geographic location as it'll give away answers to others. The gulls were a news style 'And Finally...' rather than a location to be guessed, but I admire the twist of using what3words. There's an idea brewing for a future quiz...

I typed stump.trade.shovel (no 's' on the end) into what3words initially. Pretty certain I wasn't in the dense forest north of the River Assemetquagan in New Brunswick, Canada today.

Ferry, yes. Wightlink, no. Below PMH, yes.

In the words of the recently departed Marvin Lee Aday; "Two out of three ain't bad." :P

Feel free to guess ferry company again.

6 - (this seems too easy) the Hythe Ferry - but I guess the real question is "where" - so I'll guess approaching Southampton

it does, sort of, with a short gap as the Fareham-Gosport bus/cycle way, which I will hopefully be doing this Saturday.

That's the lot all correctly answered. Even the tricky bus one.

Finn and I have had a grand couple of days around Portsmouth and Southampton. The Hythe Pier Railway is another quirky railway ticked off the bucket list. 2ft gauge with third rail at 250v DC has to be unique. I've also learnt that the locomotives used are over 100 years old, having been built in 1917. They were originally built as battery locomotives and employed in a mustard gas factory in Avonmouth! I also learnt that the Hythe Pier is now Grade II listed.

I did enjoy the bus journey back from Hythe to Southampton although a train would've been better. One for the future perhaps, if the Fawley Branch reopens to passengers.

If you're ever in this area and want to make use of multiple buses across many operators then I highly recommend the Solent Go tickets. Validity across Portsmouth, Southampton and surrounding areas. Paper day and week tickets (for bus travel only) can be bought on board buses. There's also a smart card product that can be loaded with various tickets, including the Gosport and Hythe Ferries.

My late mother spent much of her early years in the Eastleigh area and on the Isle of Wight. She made use of the Hythe ferry may a time. I had never experienced it, so took her for one final ride on both the pier tramway and ferry back in October 2010. She was thrilled as the latest Cunard liner, the [then officially unnamed] Queen Elizabeth was berthed at the Ocean Terminal and the captain of the Hythe ferry did a very brief detour and circuit to allow us to view the liner.

I haven't come across that bus/cycleway, are the two users separated by a fence or verge or kerb or is it a shared road?

Gosport isn't exciting but it isn't as bad as some people have made it out to be. It does feel distinctly militaristic though, not surprising given the dominance of the navy here, but it is very easy to cycle around, as a lot of residents there do.

I've used the Hythe ferry a couple of times but not for several years now. Is the pier still as ropy as it was when I was last there? It certainly didn't feel that safe to walk the length of after I disembarked from the boat.

The busway is basically a standard single carriageway road width which cyclists can use as well as buses, (and emergency vehicles).  Barriers drop to close it overnight.

If you find a road/busway intersection on Google Streetview you can see the setup:

https://goo.gl/maps/kqRcyd75E1iUZCEt8

IIRC an early proposal did take it all the way to the station, another 750m or so, but they found there was no easy way to get back onto the local road network into Fareham town centre.

Did you manage to see the old Gosport station, the first station for Portsmouth opened in 1841, six years before Portsmouth and Southsea station and used by Queen Victoria to get to the IoW?

I believe there is still the intention to link the busway to the station, not sure how. Will be interesting to see on Saturday if the have completed the other end to Rowner Road. You carry on past the old Fort Brockhurst station. The converted Gosport station, to flats, is very nice far better than the bombed out mess I remember as a kid.

My normal route is Fareham, the busway then follow the old Stokes Bay line down to the coast and have my bite by the Gosport lifeboat station and view the shipping. I then cycle to Gosport passing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Monckton (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Monckton), otherwise known as No.1 Military Training Establishment (1956-present). Ferry to Gosport, Old Portsmouth, Southsea, Eastney, Hayling Ferry, the old Hayling Billy line and Havant station for return journey via Guildford.

Not this time. I have however seen it many times in the past. There's a nice B&B next door called Spring Garden that I've stayed in numerous times over the years.

Did the Fareham - Gosport busway yesterday (29/1/22).

Yes there is still a large sign the Fareham end saying extension to Fareham centre, subject to government funding. Not quite sure how they would do it for buses, doable for bikes?

The extension the other end, is now complete to Rowner Road bar some minor snagging (fence panels etc.)

Sort of following in my footsteps and this thread, YouTubers, Paul and Rebecca Whitewick have just uploaded their walk along the Gosport Line as part of their 'Every Disused Stations" series. Their videos are well worth watching - I'm a subscriber to their channel and never miss their content. Most enjoyable.
