Title: Out and about - first week in March, 2022
Post by: grahame on March 07, 2022, 06:24:53
I was out and about last week - a Wednesday trip to Salisbury (2 buses and 2 trains) to meet with a rail contact there, and Saturday to the Severnside Area to meet up with friends from FoSBR and Railfuture (2 buses and 8 trains). And out to a show on Saturday evening. But I dropped my photographs.  Can you help me identify which one I took where ... (one each, please, at first - bit of a quiz and let's give everyone a chance)

Truly we have a great variety in our public transport.

7.  Clifton Down railway station.

Near the bottom of that ramp is a sign saying ‘cyclists dismount’. I always wonder whether it’s aimed at people who’ve been riding along the platform, or those who’ve just come slaloming down the ramp…

It wasn't just for you, but it's certainly one of the harder ones in the quiz - or so I thought - harder ones are being identified all over the place.  Perhaps that's because of the kindness of knowledgable members who know most of the answers in leaving the easier ones for others who may not know many.

I wondered what that architectural feature was ... thanks for the extra data.  Bath Spa is an interesting station and would probably be worth a "historic tour" at some point - probably a lot of trouble to organise, unless anyone reading this might know better  ;D ...

There is a video available to view on the BBC website or iPlayer called 'Men of Steam'. It was filmed in 1962 and approximately halfway through follows the Station Master at Bath Spa going about his duties. You get to see the spiral steps up to the signal box as well as a look inside. After the section on Bath Spa the video takes a look at Freshford, complete with sheep running amok!

As I am here, picture 5 is Trowbridge.

Found a rather good photo of the signal box taken in the early 70s. I would imagine it didn’t last much longer after that.

I have corrected No.3.   Bath is a City, so perhaps it doesn't have a TOWN centre?   I would suggest that the city centre starts a short  distance to the West of Manvers Street.

Complete answer set

1 Sea Mills - bradshaw
2 Salisbury - MVR S&T and Western Pathfinder
3 Bath Bus Station - stuving
4 Bedminster - eXPassenger
5 Trowbridge - RA
6 Melksham (Spa Road) - Reginald25
7 Clifton Down - johnneyw
8 Shirehampton - johnneyw
9 Melksham (station) - eightonedee
10 Stapleton Road - bradshaw
* 11 Worle - brooklea
12 Oldfield Park - Timmer
* 13 Holy Trinity Gyratory, Trowbridge - Trowres
14 Parson Steet - brooklea
15 Bath Spa - Timmer
16 Bath "Town Centre" (not quite - Manvers Street)
17 Redland - Western Pathfinder
18 Hotwells "branch" from Sea Mills - Mark A
19 Melksham Assembly Hall - Reginald25
20 Yatton - TonyN
21 Bristol Temple Meads - ellendune
22 Weston-super-mare - eightonedee
23 Montpelier - Red Squirrel

In defence of use of the word "town", m'lud, I submit that in common parlance someone living in the suburbs might have asked a neighbour "I'm going into town today - is there anything you want me to get from Debenhams?".  Rather than use the word "city".  (Other department stores are now available.)

Quite so. Didn't Dire Straits go way on down south to London Town? As did Dick Whittington and his cat, though they were going the other way at first. Ewan McColl was referring to Salford is his song Dirty Old Town, which to my surprise I find is also a city.

When I was a kid, we'd get the No.3 bus 'into town' to visit Fairfax House, Jones's, Lewis's or maybe even pop into Victor Value. Later on, when Dad had acquired a rather elderly Austin A50, we'd park on a bombsite somewhere round Newfoundland Road and Mum would drag us into C&A. But whatever we did, and however we got there, it was always 'town'.

I must give you that one.  Petts Wood to Victoria or Charing Cross was into town (city of Westminster).  Mind you, into Cannon Street and Holborn Viaduct was into the City (London). To Sydenham Hill was in to school and Sevenoaks was just to school

Thank you for your generosity.  These terms are all strangely familiar - and nostalgic - from when I lived in Catford back in the 1960s.  Now that I live in Gloucestershire I look back on London as somewhere for the young, who have the energy to enjoy the attractions and the resilience to cope with commuting and pollution.

And many thanks for the quizzes which I for one always enjoy.
