Title: Bristol 10k Race (05/05/2008)
Post by: Lee on May 03, 2008, 15:22:16
Race officials for the first Bristol 10k run will work through the early hours to create a course for the 5,000 runners who are expected to take part on Monday. The operation to set up fences, barriers and other parts of the course will start at 3am (link below.)

The race starts at 9.30am in the city centre, with runners going up the Portway and back into the middle of Bristol.

It is thought the event will act as a warm-up to this year's Bristol Reebok Half Marathon, which takes place in September.

Bristol City Council, which is organising both events as part of a themed year called RunBristol, hopes the 10k will grow in popularity in the coming years to rival the half marathon.

Bristol-based charities the Association of Children's Hospices (ACH) and Penny Brohn Cancer Care will be beneficiaries of the 10k race, while St Peter's Hospice and ACH will benefit from the runners' sponsorship for the Bristol Half Marathon.

The 10k will be one of the major annual boosts for these charities, with hundreds of thousands of pounds due to be raised.

A number of roads around the course will be closed in a rolling programme. Diversions will be in place to keep disruption to a minimum and to allow motorists access to the city and Broadmead shopping centre which will remain open as normal.

The transport map in the organisers' booklet to runners shows Pilning station. I hope none of the entrants try to use it tomorrow, or they may just miss the start. (Doesn't show Yate either - maybe they've used a very old map!)
