Title: Newport (Gwent) Station
Post by: Mark A on February 06, 2023, 20:48:39
Be aware that platforms 2/3 at Newport are seeing some major work. Not sure to what, as everything's behind sheet steel hoardings which narrows the platforms and to some extent seals the one off from the other.

The extent of the work is enough for some passengers (ok, me) to need to check that it *is* actually Newport at which they have alighted, especially if they're less than 100% functional having done several hours* on a full and standing two carriage 153, standing in for a loco and carriages set originating from Holyhead (ok, also me).

* Compensation may be forthcoming, let's see.

Works have ongoing on those platforms for a considerable time

Thanks for this. Perhaps some 'This is what we're doing and this is how long it will take' signage would help. To be fair, there may be some info: space for circulating on platform 2/3 is eaten by sheet steel barriers, so, not many locations for notices for passengers changing trains.

The journey in question was the return half of a Cardiff to Chester trip, and the situation was covered by the national conditions of carriage, so, compensation *is* forthcoming, for which I'm grateful to Transport for Wales.

Speaking of the national conditions of carriage *cough* travel:

Sorry that this will probably have been done to death: if an incoming Eurostar runs late and passengers miss an onward connection that involves an advance ticket, does the UK rail company allow travel by a later service  as indicated in national conditions of travel 9.4? I've a horrible feeling that I've asked this myself recently...

9.4 Where you are using a Ticket valid on a specific train service or train services (such as
an “advance” Ticket) and you miss a service because a previous connecting train
service was delayed, you will be able to travel on the next train service provided by the
Train Company with whom you were booked without penalty.

P.S An aside, whenever I use the Coffeeshop's 'Search' I always imagine Graham, behind the scenes, monitoring search activity and finding my attempts to find stuff as hilariously illogical. Just searched for '9.4', mind, with which 'Search' wasn't quite pleased.

For International travel, you should book a CIV ticket to guarantee onward carriage.

Although all searches are logged, it's very rare indeed I would look at what's being searched for.  Various unusual activity requests do cause the system to send me an email to let me know, but I can't recall bing alerted to unusual search activity.

The deep search is pretty basic in the terms it will accept, in order to ensure there aren't security holes created by special characters.
