Title: Locomotive speed records

Posting this into "on this day" about the first steam locomotive to exceed 100 m.p.h. - though different sources give different dates

But even then the record for steam locomotives was of limited historical interest. The future was foretold in the Illustrated London News of 26 July 1902:
Quote
The railway speed record has been broken on the little line between the suburbs of Berlin and Zossen by an electric car travelling at 110 miles per hour."

OK, it was an experimental vehicle, but it did carry passengers. The motors were under the floor and the AC power supplied, of course, by overhead wires.
