Not only tube lines. I worked at Monument, Aldgate East, and Mile End and the ticket halls were just below the ground and if you blew your nose you had black dust in your hanky.

It wasn't helped pre 1971 when the steam locomotives came through especially if held at Aldgate East.

Reminded me of the conversation in which a friend recounted a footplate ride on a steam-hauled freight train via the East London line in the sixties when such things had become uncommon.

Passengers on the platforms they passed were said to appear 'Surprised'. Those at Rotherhithe particularly so.

At least they all got saved elsewhere.  But I shudder every time I am reminded of this lost opportunity
