Title: Plans for Cornwall's first five-star hotel unveiled
Post by: Chris from Nailsea on July 12, 2008, 15:18:18
Plans have been unveiled for a ^30 million luxury hotel in Cornwall. With 130 en-suite rooms spread over six floors, it would be the county's first five-star hotel. The planned Newquay development, named Coast, is aimed at a top-end clientele, and features include a suspended restaurant between two floors, a pool and spa, high-class kiosks and boutiques plus a seven-screen cinema.

Paul Bateman, planning partner with developers Laurence Associates, said the hotel would fill a big hole in the luxury end of the market: "There's an absence of real high-end accommodation anywhere in the county. Newquay is becoming a far more desirable town and this development would act as a further catalyst to its renaissance."

Mr Bateman said Newquay Airport made it by far the most accessible location in the county. He envisaged that many of the clients using the hotel would fly from London and would expect similar levels of luxury to those found in high-class establishments in the capital. "Newquay is not a very high-quality tourism accommodation resort and we want to change that."

Public consultation is now taking place before full plans are submitted to Restormel Borough Council.

Dozens of hotels around the resort have been knocked down in the last two years to make way for new luxury developments. Last week, a former surf lodge on Newquay's Headland Road sold at the staggering price of ^10 million an acre despite property prices falling nationally.
