Title: The Wider Picture
Post by: grahame on August 26, 2008, 07:55:03
Would you like to tell us about some other activities of the Department for Transport that could have relevant lessons for us?  Or describe your rail experiences in Slovenia as they make an interesting contrast to the UK?  Or fill us in on the battle at Westenhanger, Beltring or Swale to maintain the current service levels? Such posts will be welcome in "The Wider Picture".

We have also launched a "Frequent Posters Club" this morning - a board for current, frequent posters which has a similarly wide remit, but which can only be read (and posted to) when you've reached a certain minimum number of posts.  Chat with your fellow regulars there, without everything you say being "billboarded" across Yahoo and Google!

As a trial, the type of articles that have been appearing in the "Greater Britain" section of the Save The Train forum (http://www.savethetrain.org.uk/forum/index.php?board=9.0) will now appear in this section of the Coffee Shop forum.

The aim is to provide a "one-stop shop" for & a strong general, comparative element to the news article links that we provide, and also to free up the Save The Train forum to concentrate on TransWilts issues.

My emphasis within the quoting, Lee.    This is exactly the approach / material that will help widen the usefulness of the board to passengers in the FGW area - and if anyone from outside teh area finds it useful too, that's fabulous.  At the same time, by keeping this material in "The Wider area" it won't clutter up line-specific boards

The signalling blunder story interests me. How could a modern signalling system let that happen? Surely it wouldn't permit a signaller to set two conflicting routes?

Campaign for Better Transport have sent a letter to chief executives of all county councils, unitary authorities, metropolitan borough councils and PTEs in England (excluding London) regarding the RFA2 process (link below.)
http://www.bettertransport.org.uk/system/files/RFA_letter_to_authorities_1.pdf

Quote from: Campaign for Better Transport letter
RFA2 can be used for capital spending on a wide range of public transport schemes

^ Bus schemes ^ infrastructure costs, such as bus stops and bus lanes
^ Buying buses
^ Tram schemes ^ infrastructure costs
^ Buying trams
^ Reopening/opening a railway line
^ Reopening/opening a railway station
^ Railway junction/signalling improvements
^ Buying train carriages to provide new or more frequent services
^ Buying train carriages to lengthen trains ^ and reduce overcrowding
^ Improving/building public transport interchanges

Rail improvements can include passenger and freight schemes. Schemes must be additional to those already included in the Government^s plan for the railways from 2009-14, the High Level Output Specification. Additional subsidy costs resulting from new rail schemes would need to be met from existing revenue budgets.

The Department is willing to consider authorities^ plans to have new train carriages funded, but there are risks associated with this so you will need to obtain further advice from them.
