Transport 2000 has launched a competition to find the train stations in England and Wales that are most difficult to travel to (links below.)

I've had an email from T2000 asking me to give publiocity to this competiton (Lee, I guess you've done that already for me).   I wrote back as follows:

Of course, Melksham station will be the easy winner of your competition ;-) ...

In the back of the industrial estate, with fork lifts unloading HGVs right outside the station gate, it's an obstacle course to get to the station. The BBC came to record a TV interview with the real sounds, but we had to move elsewhere away from the industrial noises.    There ARE cycle lockers - but no-one knows where the keys are.  It's said they're held at the town hall, 3/4 of a mile away.

Buses to the station?   Not a chance!  and no taxis, an no phone to call one.   Even the information point to contact the train company has been broken for weeks ...

Does this serve a small community?   No, it's the only station for a town of 24,000, with more people living within 10km than within 10km of any other station in Wiltshire.

Graham

Good to see the Melksham issue highlighted , along with other worthy FGW - served stations.

One thing puzzles me though. Quote :

"Bristol Temple Meads was highlighted by respondents as being poorly-signposted from the town centre and lacking a bus connection to the Bedminster area."

Just a thought , but why not use the train?

Newquay must be in the top ten for getting to by rail! pretty poor for Cornwalls second largest town!
