Title: Where to go for day trip
Post by: DevonTrains2008 on December 20, 2008, 16:33:11
I am looking at taking a day trip from Whimple via Bristol (preferably on FGW HST's) to an interesting place on Monday. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Many Thanks  :)

I'd suggest Bath or Bristol. Gloucester will take longer to get to and not so much to see.

TBH, Gloucester is not worth the trek, unless you want to see the very fine cathedral or gaze in speechless admiration at the depot.  However, combine your trip with an extension to Cheltenham and you may have the makings of a reasonable day out.  If you want to do it in an HST, you will need to get to Swindon.  The trip up the valley is quite pretty.

If shopping  is your thing, Bristol is always a good destination and also has plenty to see.  A side trip to Clifton would also be worthwile  Bath is extremely photogenic and is/was? a world heritage city.

Further afield, but giving you some HST miles, Reading has the four leading UK retailers within 200 yards of each other, a large shopping mall right in the centre, riverside cafes and bars and the ruins of an 11th Century Abbey and what was a larger church than St Peter in Rome a short stroll away.  Oxford needs no introduction and Windsor is accessible via Slough or with changes, via SWT from Reading.

Oddly enough, I had a really good day out in Bruton a year or two ago. Interesting (and some odd!) architecture, meaning lots of photo opportunities; lovely tea rooms and a couple of fine pubs. All depends what you're looking for, of course.

I don't suppose you're planning to make a start on the rest of the language anytime soon, are you?  (http://www.millan.net/minimations/smileys/bokmal.gif)

Why do you want to travel on FGW HSTS? The refurb ones are terrible.

Not sure what kind of day out you want but if it's a rail one.

Can you get  a travelcard  from Whimple? If you can why not  take a 159 to Wimbledon and ride the Croydon Trams to Elmers End (if you've not done it the New Addington branch is spectacular). Then SE to Lewisham and the DLR you can get to West Ham and then to  Upminister on C2C to do the Romford Branch then back to Stratford and the Jubilee Line back to Waterloo.

Lovely cathedral and IMO, a great atmosphere.  One of my fave days out.

Just walk into town from the station, it's only 1/2 a mile or so. You will pass a good Wetherspoon's for lunch, or there plenty of other spots to eat.

Well in the end we went to...
TRURO!
yes, we went on FGW HST's and despite what people say I think they're great - unlike SWT we actually got our seat reservations from Exeter!

For next time I'd like to know what Westbury's like?

If you make an early start, you could try Worcester:

*Station among shops, just 100 yards to the start of the big ones
*Cathedral
*River side
*Boat trips
*Racecourse
*Woolworths! ;)

If you were to stay for a few days, you're only 15 miles to the Severn Valley Railway :) - 20 min train to Kidderminster.

Malvern Hills nearby.

Westbury couldn't really be described as a tourist attraction, but you could then take the train to Bradford on Avon, whcih is nice and twee.

Is it chuff! Truro is a great city, nice local pubs with lots of REAL ale's, lots of shops, a magnificent cathederal, boat trips etc.

Thanks.

Would it be possible to go Honiton > Exeter > Westbury > Salisbury > Honiton by buying a Honiton > Westbury Return?

I think this would be a good trip taking in FGW HST's, SWT 158's and FGW 158's - I would also be able to use both Paddington and Waterloo lines in one day, and not too much expenditiure!

Use the "via" function on http://www.fgwtickets.co.uk/buy_tickets/requirements/journey_requirements.asp?sitecode=FGW and it will soon tell you.

Hello

I am again faced with the challenge of choosing a day out destination

Probably departing from Feniton and want to know some information about some different places - particularly interested in Bradford On Avon!

I hope you can tell me some info?

Your route is allowed with an 'any permitted' ticket. Bear in mind that the HON-WSB Off-Peak Return (SVR), route 'any permitted' is ^33.00 - ^9.50 more than the route 'Yeovil' ticket. Also the route 'Yeovil' does not permit interchange between Junction and Pen Mill.
Interestingly you can also travel HON-WSB via Bristol on the ^33.00 SVR to maximise your mileage/traction options. This could give you a multitude of places to visit on a circular route.

I rather like Bradford on Avon - it's well worth including the canal, and the tithe barn (as well as other places!) on any visit there: see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bradford_on_Avon  ;)
