Title: Worcester Shrub Hill's waiting room
Post by: IndustryInsider on April 26, 2009, 09:22:55
Anybody know when this facility on the up platforms will be available for passenger use again? I gather it is being restored by a charity/trust but I've never actually seen anybody working on it, and it's been out of bounds for several years now.

For anybody that doesn't know Shrub Hill, this room is the only form of shelter from the wind that tends to whip up on the exposed platform. Pretty shocking that no other facility, (even temporary) could be provided.

I've always wondered why they have spent ^s on this, as Shrub Hill is to close/ be rebuilt in the future.

Thanks, IndustryInsider!

Just for those (like me!) who don't know Worcester Shrub Hill, there's some background information about the waiting room on wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worcester_Shrub_Hill_railway_station#Waiting_room).

It is with immense surprise and pleasure that I can report that Worcester Shrub Hill's waiting room has now finally been restored and reopened following far too many years of false starts and false hopes!  I am amazed that London Midland weren't required/obliged to provide some sort of alternative facilities at any time during the last ten years that it has been closed!  Now, let's get those lifts working and converted to passenger use, so that the station is fully accessible without requiring supervision over a foot crossing!

The waiting room looks lovely:

Absolutely delighted it is finished at last. A wonderful  first rate restoration job has been done. I bet some people will be so admiring of this cast iron structure with its very rare 'majolica' Broseley tiles, that they might actually miss their trains !

The Waiting Room has been officially opened by the Duke Of Gloucester:

One would have thought that the Duchess of Gloucester might have been persuaded to,.... er tinkle the ivory/ivories......seeing as she is the President of the Royal Academy of Music, and a fine pianist too !
