Title: Helston Railway - line re-opening plans
Post by: Lee on August 30, 2007, 11:27:58
A train will arrive at the Helston branch line next week for the first time in more than 40 years (link below.)
http://thisiscornwall.co.uk/displayNode.jsp?nodeId=144125&command=displayContent&sourceNode=232450&contentPK=18241920&folderPk=108202&pNodeId=232470

A two-car diesel train will be making its way to Trevarno - by road - as part of ambitious restoration plans by the Helston Railway Preservation Company.

It will be a huge achievement for the group of volunteers , who have been working over the past few years to re-open the line which was closed in 1964.

Chairman Stuart Walker said: "This is another major milestone in our project to re-open the line."

"Helston Railway volunteers have been working really hard preparing the track bed and laying rails ready for the diesel unit to be delivered."

The train will be transferred to the recently re-laid track at Trevarno on Tuesday,  September 4 and Wednesday. Each car will be transported separately by road.

The train has been undergoing restoration work next to the main line at Gwinear Road.

It was acquired from the West Somerset Railway in May last year.

Since then Helston Railway Preservation Company volunteers have been working to prepare access for the train at Trevarno and re-lay more than 200 feet of track.

Anyone wishing to observe the arrival of the train is asked to do so at Trevarno and not at Gwinear Road. The Railway Group said parking there is restricted and the road will need to be kept clear at all times.

For more information about the group visit www.helstondieselgroup.co.uk

Also , the previous day will see a Ruston 0-6-0 shunt locomotive become the first item of rolling stock to arrive at Trevarno.

I'm very good friends with someone who is heavilly involved in this project and they have come a very long way in a short amount of time! Well done!

They have indeed come a long way in a relatively short time. Was at Gwinear Road the weekend before last - saw the Blue Pullman heading through - and the class 103 dmu is coming along well.

As an exiled Helstonian who just missed the railway, which closed to passengers in 1962 and freight in 64, I am keenly following this project and can't wait to travel along a line I thought was gone forever.

The project is deserving of all the support and good wishes it can get. Who knows, one day "Helston" may become once more the most southerly station in the British Isles

An update to an admittedly very old thread from the BBC: (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cornwall-16632055)

Quote from: BBC
Restored train line from Trevarno to Truthall Bridge gets 1,000 passengers

A railway line which opened to the public before Christmas after volunteer restoration work has had more than 1,000 passengers using it.

Helston Railway Preservation Society (HRPS) opened the line from Trevarno to Truthall Bridge in December.

The line was taken out of operation in 1965 as part of nationwide cuts recommended by Dr Richard Beeching.

HRPS has so far laid just under a mile of track and created a station platform at Trevarno.

Richard Barnes from the society said: "It was absolutely tremendous. We thought about the numbers we might get and suddenly we doubled and tripled that."

The line has taken five years and ^60,000 to build.

The group hopes eventually to create a mile (1.6km) of line and run trains to timetable.

BBC sloppy journalism again, the line was closed before the Beeching report was even published!

Title: Re: Helston Railway - line re-opening plans
Post by: Andy on January 21, 2012, 09:13:44
It was closed to passengers in 62, to freight in 64 and the rails were lifted in 65.
The article is also confusing with regard to distances, as the rails have not yet reached Truthall Halt. However, that should change by Easter, when 1 mile of the line will have been reinstated. As I understand it, the group hopes eventually to reinstate three miles of the line, from the outskirts of Helston to Nancegollan.

Nice to read about this, but it does present challenges - I think some of the land is now in private ownership and may have been built on between Helston and Penzance.

Bus-rail connections to Helston (& beyond) are not that great (& getting worse). However, if the line were ever to be reinstated as part of NR, its best bet would be as the terminus of a service to/from Truro via Redruth and Camborne. The site of its original junction with the main line, at Gwinear Road, meant that, in the age of the car, it didn't have a significant local traffic flow to tap into in the same way as, say, Falmouth-Truro. Although Helston has doubled in size since the days of the railway, I can't see an NR reopening ever happening but fingers crossed that the heritage line will continue to progress as much as possible.

and its not even easy to get to by road, the main road between redruth and helston goes single track in several places!

I went to have a look two years ago when the first few yards of track were laid - access is through the Trevarno Estate http://www.trevarno.co.uk/ (http://www.trevarno.co.uk/).

The problem is that the Estate is up for sale - it's on the Hayle to Heslton road and also has a marvelous gardening tools museum.

It's been great to see the progress of the Helston Railway Group.  Their ultimate aim is to restore about three miles of the old branch.  A steam railway here would complement the Bodmin & Wenford and would certainly not detract from them or the national rail network.

There is no prospect of NR services to anywhere near Helston, I'm afraid.  Rightly, the Helston Railway has never sought this.

All power to their collective elbows.

Helston Railway to Remain Open Despite Trevarno Closure

Helston Railway has confirmed that it will be business as usual for them despite Trevarno Gardens closing its doors to the public from 22nd April. The Railway will now also be offering passenger brake van rides twice a week to help attract extra visitors.

Trevarno has agreed to allow visitors to the Railway to continue using the Trevarno Gardens car park but instead of heading in via the kiosk, through the courtyard and gardens there will be a new and shorter route up to the Railway directly from the top corner of the existing car parking area.

Helston Railway Chairman Richard Barnes says: "Of course, a lot of our customers were originally just visitors to the gardens who then came up to see us, but from now on they will be dedicated railway visitors, which over the next few months we hope will turn into a really large number.

Last year, apart from a couple of special events, those who came up to the railway were only able to watch the work in progress and find out how well we were progressing, but our aim has always been to get passengers back on the Helston Branch Line. This year we are doing exactly that!"

He adds: "We are open and running services on Thursdays and Sundays, and instead of just looking, anyone who visits will be able to travel on our brake van up and down the line for over a mile.  We believe that this tremendous and unique experience will stand on its own, even without the gardens, and will go from strength to strength, over the coming years."

On their facebook page, the group have posted a couple of extraordinary photos of the "excavations" that are going on at Truthall Halt in preparation for the rebuilding of the station. These have revealed the barlow rails and wooden sleepers used in the construction of the original platform there. It will be rather nice to see the GWR pagoda shelter return to Cornwall once again!

Trevarno Estate closure 'will not stop private railway'

Volunteers have spent seven years reinstating part of the Helston branch line at Trevarno - where the first chairman of the Helston Railway Company lived

The closure of country estate in Cornwall will not affect a private railway operating on it, volunteers have said.

Helston Railway has a mile of track that runs through Trevarno Estate near Helston.

The 750-acre estate closed to the public at the weekend after attempts to sell it failed.

But enthusiasts who run the railway have insisted it will continue to operate.

Until its closure, the ^10m Trevarno Estate attracted about 80,000 visitors a year.

The original Helston branch line, which connected the town to main line services to London, was closed in 1964 as part of cuts recommended by Dr Richard Beeching, the chairman of the British Railways Board.

The not-for-profit Helston preservation society has spent more than seven years reinstating part of the branch line from Trevarno to Truthall Bridge, which opened in December.

It had also created a station platform at Trevarno, hoping to attract some of its many visitors.

"When the estate was open we weren't actually running passenger services... now we've lost the foot fall from Trevarno, but we can offer them rides," society chairman Richard Barnes told BBC News.

He said the owners of the estate had not only given permission for work on the track to continue, but had been "actively supporting" the society.

The preservation society said Trevarno was the "most appropriate starting point" as it was the home of William Bickford Smith - the first chairman of the original Helston Railway.

"[But] we've got a positive attitude towards the railway and the closing of Trevarno is a bit of a blip, but I don't think it will cause us too much trouble and we'll proceed as far as we possibly can," Spike Laugher, the preservation company's general manager said.

From the Falmouth Packet: (http://www.falmouthpacket.co.uk/news/9708997.Helston_Railway_s_125th_year/)

Quote from: Falmouth Packet
Helston Railway's 125th year

Nothing can match the importance of Flora Day in the Helston calendar, but this year another celebration took place the day afterwards marking significant events in the transport history of the town.

A plaque was presented on Wednesday by Elizabeth Bolitho at Hens Horn Court, on the site of the former Helston Railway Goods Shed, to commemorate the opening of the Helston Railway between Helston and Gwinear Road.

The first train on this line ran exactly 125 years ago that day, on May 9, 1887.

The plaque was presented on behalf of the Helston Railway Preservation Society to the Directors of Coastline Housing, who now own and manage Hens Horn Court as sheltered housing, and Margaret Williamson who is their longest staying resident.

Also marked, by the presentation of a second plaque, was the terminus at the Lizard where the first railway company operated bus service ran in 1903.

Robert Nettleton, chief executive of Coastline Housing said: ^On behalf of Coastline I am delighted that there will now be a plaque providing a permanent reminder of the historical value of a building that is much used by the residents of Hens Horn Court.^

Alan Burton, the chairman of trustees of the Helston Railway Charity said: ^This marks a real milestone in the history of the railway, particularly as now 125 years after the first train made its way from Helston, and some 50 years after the railway was closed, there are again trains running on the part of the line that our volunteers have restored.^

At the event in Hens Horn Court, a new book about the 125 years of the Helston Railway by Chris Heaps was launched.

This book also covers the history of the bus service to The Lizard and copies of the book are available for sale from the railway charity.

After refreshments in the former goods shed, now restored as part of the Hens Horn Court sheltered housing development, the invited guests and Railway Volunteers were conveyed to The Lizard in a number of restored buses.

These included a 1933 ex-Western National single decker provided by The Thames Valley & Great Western Omnibus Trust; a former First Western National Bristol VR double decker restored to former Great Western Railway (^GWR^) chocolate and cream livery in 2003 and supplied by the Cornwall Bus Preservation Society, and an ex-London Transport Routemaster preserved by Western Greyhound.

At The Top House Inn at the Lizard, a Transport Trust Red Wheel plaque was unveiled by Mrs Bolitho, which was affixed on the wall of the pub to mark the terminus of the first railway-operated motor bus service in Great Britain.

This ground breaking bus service was introduced by the GWR in August 1903 following demand for the construction of a light railway from Helston which the GWR had determined would not be financially viable.

Hollywood heart throb Hugh Grant has continued his tour of the Helston and Lizard area with a visit to Helston Railway.

Hugh, who was yesterday reported as being at Roskilly^s enjoying an ice cream, also spent some time at Prospidnick Station, where railway enthusiasts have been restoring the old Helston branch line tracks.

His first visit was to the buffet car, where volunteers Margaret and Pam were on duty.

Margaret said her ^jaw dropped^ when she realised who her famous customer was.

Hugh then took a 25-minute train ride along the section of restored track before returning to the station for a cream tea, where he was happy to give autographs and chat to staff and visitors.

While there Hugh signed the railway company^s petition to build a new access track, sidings, a platform,100-space car park, amenity and picnic space at Prospidnick Bridge, to the north at Trevarno Farm.

For these lucky ladies cream tea turned into 'scream tea' after unexpectedly serving a rather famous customer.

Last week the Packet reported how Margaret Gough and Pam Hobbs had served a familiar looking man in the buffet car at Helston Railway - only to transpire it was none other than Hollywood film star Hugh Grant.

Pam said: ^I was a bit cheeky and asked him if he would be willing to have his photograph taken and he said, 'Why don't we take one of me behind the counter with you both?' "

"So that's what happened. He was just like you expect him to be, charming, smiling and kind.^

So if they look a bit like the cats that got the cream, well, who can blame them?

There seems little political will for heritage railways down in Cornwall, with the Bodmin & Wenford, Helston and Launceston all having problems extending their operations. Maybe it's because the peninsular is so narrow, with everyone living close to the mainline or a branch line, and so there isn't a sense of loss..?

Compare this to North Devon, a veritable railway desert - Tarka line excepted - and how Exmoor National Park have been granting funds to the L&BR to help them extend their line.

Or lost, more like. Time for a Huge Rant (see what I did there?)

I agree with ellendunne that it could be worth an appeal, especially if there is strong local support and little local opposition. I do not know the state of play. It's a potentially expensive business, though, especially for the council. Another strategy could be a revised application with fewer parking spots.

The opposition is mainly a few, vocal, 'NIMBYs'. The most vocal of the campaigners has actually built his house next to the railway within the last couple of years. Not only did the original railway come first in this case, but the preserved railway also came first.

Yes.

The Councillors' logic is that they can show the objectors that they have "clean hands" when the inspector allows the appeal.

They can't play this trick with big applications as the applicant can claim costs.

Good luck to the railway.

New plans for Helston Railway tabled with Cornwall Council

A tourist attraction near Helston has submitted new plans which it hopes will finally settle its long-running planning problems.

Helston Railway Preservation Company applied to Cornwall Council last week for a new platform and car park at Lower Prospidnick.

The railway has spent the past two years trying to get planning permission for a new home.

The group built a temporary platform at Prospidnick but failed to get planning permission. An earlier application was withdrawn after people living nearby complained and plans for a development at Trevarno Farm were refused last summer.

Now the railway has reapplied for an extension to the track beyond the Prospidnick road bridge, a new platform behind Trevarno Farm and to retain a 60-space car park.

Richard Barnes of the Helston Railway Preservation Society said the temporary platform would be removed if the new plans were approved. "This moves the platform as far away as possible from properties and takes into account all the comments made by the planning inspector," he said.

The consultation period is still open and Cornwall Council has received one comment in support of the plans.

Claircorrect Roberts said: "I support this excellent venture which provides much needed volunteering and community engagement opportunities for young people and others, as well as being an interesting and educational attraction for visitors from far and wide. The developments outlined can only improve this worthwhile initiative."

Previously people complained about noise, traffic and fumes from the railway.

A decision will be made later by Cornwall Council.

So sorry to have to tell you all that our planning application was rejected yesterday by Cornwall Council.  Our volunteers are naturally very disappointed - but we have instructed our planning consultants to submit an appeal.  We will keep you informed......

Perhaps they're attempting too much too quickly.

The Helston railway website reports that its appeal against the decision to deny planning permission for its proposed extension has been upheld.

"Thursday, 2nd June, 2016 - By Barbara Barnes

Just a short note to say we won our planning appeal.  Thank you to everyone who helped, whether it was working on the application, raising funds, giving us support, writing letters, or holding our hands and telling us to keep trying.  You have all been absolutely wonderful and we couldn^t have done it without you.  Many, many thanks. "

The railway will now be able to extend about 1/4 mile further north towards Gwinear Road and construct a permanent station. In addition, it has received a grant from the Helston Downsland Trust enabling it to proceed with the restoration of Truthall Halt at the southern end of the line, about 1.75 miles from the original terminus at Helston.

...........and the local councillors will be able innocently to commiserate with the protestor(s) while accepting the invitation to drink the railway's champagne at the formal opening of the extension!

The Helston Railway reopens this Thursday. The line now will operate a service, hence qualifying for VAT exemption for the first time. The rebuilding of Truthall Halt enables passengers to travel from the new starting point of Prospidnick and leave the service before getting a subsequent one to return. More promising is that the former base at Trevarno, which has been closed to the public, since the neighbouring gardens were sold, closed and reopened as a private home, is now available as a request stop in the new 2017 timetable.

"On Thursday, 1st September, the current Mayor of Helston – Councillor Gillian Gear – and Mrs. Elizabeth Bolitho were in attendance when the former Commissioner for Transport for London (TfL) and now the Chairman of Network Rail – Sir Peter Hendy, CBE – officiated at a similar ceremony to launch a short extension and a new platform at Trevarno Farm for the Helston Railway Preservation Society (HRPS)."

From Helston w/s.

Not just the Councillors getting a free tipple!

Well done everyone, all the same.

A former station reopening in Cornwall is an extremely rare occurrence and the reappearance of Truthall Halt on a railway timetable for the first time since 1962 has an added significance in that it'll be the most southerly railway station in mainland Britain.

Nitpicking.

An update:
Truthall Halt was formally reopened this month by HRH the Duke of Gloucester - the prince, not the locomotive ;-) - and so becomes mainland Britain's most southerly station. It has also been announced that the SDJR Trust's Peckett, Kilmersdon, will be arriving from the WSR in May and will haul a BR suburban coach on loan from the South Devon railway along the mile-long track during the 2018 summer season.

The Railway is now talking to landowners on the stretch to the Cober Viaduct, continuing southwards from Truthall, with a view to progressing towards this as it's next track addition project.

On a point of order, Mr Chairman, can a Halt be at the end of the line?

Shouldn't it be Truthall Parkway? There's space for a car outside the gate.

On a second point of order, we don't have a chair - we have a webmaster.

There have been services that terminate at halts in the past - and the Helston Railway looks to its heritage from the past where that's appropriate.   Bedwyn Halt, for example.   And trains reversed, and still do, at Coombe Junction Halt. Perhaps Cortyon Halt is the closest to Truthall though, with the line going no further than the halt having been closed beyond;  not sure when "halt" was dropped from the name.

The first steam service since 1962 is due to run into Truthall Halt this coming Sunday. It's the farthest south a locomotive can go on the island of Great Britain.

A cracking day out.  Fantastic achievement by the Helston Railway.  Very well attended by the public as well.

The Kits loved it, so happy days all round.

Here is one of my photos from the Monday. The sun came out in the afternoon making perfect conditions for a shot at Truthall Halt. The train was busy all day which is great for the railway quite a few people stopped in their cars on the bridge too to get photos. A fantastic job has been done restoring the station.
