The Telegraph also have the story of her Maj slumming it (any comps in 1st?) on FCC, with some video footage.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/theroyalfamily/6833365/The-Queen-joins-commuters-on-standard-passenger-train-to-Norfolk.html.

According to The Telegraph she sat in the rear 1st class section 'furthest from the engine'. Erm, engine? On a Class 365 EMU?

I see most of the papers have quoted the First anytime single fare, but surely she must have a railcard?   ;D

Probably 'Friends and Royal Family'...

I wonder if that train ran under the reporting number "1X01" or whatever is used for the royal train these days... If it did then the signallers would have made damn sure not to delay it if at all possible!

A delightful report form The Times, wonderfully tongue-in-cheek. And most importantly from a rail perspective, totally accurate.  :D

(Edit: Apart from the reference to a 'buffet car')

One wonders whether one took advantage of the connecting bus service from Kings Lynn to Sandringham?

New train crew terms & conditions...

"Management must ensure that all train crew are presented with fresh flowers by a member of the royal family at the start of each booked turn of duty"

So how can this happen - I remember last year (2008 in case anyone reads this in a week or so's time) when Charlie boy visited worcester.  All the parking near the station building was roped off from the night before, there was no explanation until later the NEXT day when the staff at the station could disclose why - it was all hush hush

Yet the queen can board a commuter service with regular passengers?

I also suspect that her carriage was for her ONLY - I once tried to board a service from Reading to worcester where all of H was out of bounds - EVERY seat was booked - in fact no sooner did you set foot in the carriage than someone was telling you to LEAVE NOW.  Turns out it was a royal family member.

From the Daily Express article (http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/146701/Queen-goes-green-but-in-first-class-naturally) referred to in the original post on this topic:

Officials ensured nobody else sat in the Queen^s 12-seat compartment, although they insisted it would have been opened up to passengers if the other first-class compartment had been crowded.

Well I cant comment about that trip however I do know on the occasion that H was out of use - there were first class passengers standing.

imagine the 1722/1822 from PAD with H totally out of use - there was a not a seat in F or G.  and there were passengers standing.  Was it the same as A-E in terms of standing , no.  But FC passengers generally do not expect to stand.  didnt bother me as I did my usual, work out which diagram the train was on therefore which platform we'd be going from and hedging bets against a set/platform swap so I was well seated before the crowding became an issue.

Charlie came to visit the Met Office in Exeter recently, and the security around EXD and the Royal Train parked up by Newton Abbot was immense, before and during the visit.

And then thetrout appears armed with his 17 inch Dell Studio Lappy, external hard drive and 3G modem to take up the remaining 50% of the table ;D

Had one of those experinces today where you look out of  a train window - something passes and you can't work out what it is because it doesnt match anything you are expecting.

Was relieved to see that it was the Royal Train

Wonder if they were even on it?  They'd have travelled overnight (racing the sleeper) and I don't know when their "day" in Cornwall finished.

As an aside I wonder what the powers that be would have done if the Royal Train had been caught up in yesterday's problems around Castle Cary or tonight's problems in the Thames Valley.

I imagine Network Rail do their damnedest to ensure the Royal Train always gets through. Signallers are made aware that the royal train is in their neck of the woods as it carries a unique headcode. 1X-- I believe. Can't be seen to unnecessarily delay Brenda. One would not be amused.  ;)

Perhaps her Maj should take more journeys on normal passenger workings to get a flavour of what her subjects have to often put up with.

She has slummed it on occasions:

Link (http://blogs.reuters.com/oddly-enough/2009/12/23/some-mushy-peas-in-my-handbag-please/) to Reuters article.

Although I believe the proles were turfed out of this particular 1st Class section of a FCC train!

 ;D ;D ;D

Bet that train was well scrubbed and polished the night before though with no Pumpkin coffee cups and upper crust wrappers to be found under any of the seats in 1st.

Doesn't look too pleased to be there though. Wonder if the PR person who suggested One should travel to Sandringham by public transport rather than by helicopter still works at the palace.

Nah - she just got fed up with telling gags in a futile attempt to make Steve Davis smile. ;-)

With apologies for dusting off this old but newly merged topic, may I offer the following update (including pictorial evidence that Her Majesty is apparently still being stalked by a Steve Davis lookalike) from Anglia ITV News (http://www.itv.com/news/anglia/2015-12-18/rail-passengers-joined-by-the-queen-on-train-to-norfolk/):

Quote
Rail passengers joined by the Queen on train to Norfolk

The Queen joined passengers on a train from London to Norfolk for the start of the Royal Family's traditional Christmas break on her Sandringham Estate.

The Queen got off the train from King's Cross at King's Lynn station and walked up the platform with her security staff and the Duke of Edinburgh as commuters looked on.

Travelling on the 10.44am train out of King's Cross station in London on Thursday, the royal couple arrived at platform one in King's Lynn at 12.24pm - three minutes late.

Fellow travellers were unaware she was on board until they exited the train to be greeted by a large police and media presence.

One said: "What's all the fuss about - are you expecting somebody?"

It is understood the Queen paid for a standard ticket costing ^34.40.

Wearing an overcoat and headscarf to guard against the cold, she mingled with passengers on the platform before being escorted to a waiting Range Rover.

The Duke of Edinburgh, who in recent years has travelled separately, escorted her.

The couple travelled by car to the Sandringham Estate, close to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's Anmer Hall home, and will be joined by the rest of the family for Christmas Day.

Most of the family are expected to attend a Christmas Day church service on the estate where hundreds of well-wishers will watch on.

I wonder if the "waiting Range Rover" drove up from London anyway?  In which case, the train journey was a pointless waste of money (in terms of security, arrangements, etc etc).

Title: Re: Royal Train, and other trains used by Her Majesty
Post by: Chris from Nailsea on December 21, 2015, 20:11:41
Hmm. I rather gained the impression that the waiting Range Rover had been driven down to King's Lynn Station from the Sandringham estate, to collect Her Majesty and her entourage.  :-X

But it will have been followed from the station by at least one other Range Rover or Discovery driven up from London and filled with gentlemen in suits from a particular division of the Met.
