Title: Train Bike ^Ban^ For Cardiff Worker
Post by: Lee on September 11, 2007, 11:50:47
A commuter is being forced to cycle a 30-mile round trip to work because he can^t take his bike on the train (link below.)
http://icwales.icnetwork.co.uk/0100news/0200wales/tm_headline=train-bike-8216-ban-8217-for-worker%26method=full%26objectid=19756423%26siteid=50082-name_page.html

Shaun Barker , a software developer , who works in Cardiff Bay , wants to be able to leave his car at home when he goes to work.

He was hoping to take his bicycle on the train between Newport and Cardiff Central stations and then ride the rest of the way to his office in the Bay.

But after making inquiries with Arriva Trains Wales , he was told he could not take the bike on in peak times.

Shaun , who works for Informavores , has been cycling from his home in Newport , all the way to Cardiff Bay , but said he wouldn^t be able to do that in bad weather. ^I decided it was much better to cycle the whole way rather than take the car,^ he said.

^But it^s not going to happen during the winter and then I^ll be forced to drive.^

However , Arriva said there was one service he could catch ^ the 8.37am from Newport to Cardiff.

^Those are the 175 units we use for the Manchester and Holyhead routes ^ in this case travelling from Manchester,^These trains can accommodate bikes. He would need to reserve in advance.^

why can't he catch a train to the Bay (or one of the frequent buses from Central Station)?

Because he is writing to the 'press' so that means it is his only option, so he thinks!

The problem with the idiotic reservation system is that it is great if you have 2020 vision.

I genuinely dont know if I will get the 1822 or 1922 from Pad due to work - but I cant reserve on two trains.  I have to rely on a nice TM letting me put the bike in the disabled space in 1st (folds in half not as small as a brompton).

I used to leave it at pad but having had two bikes stripped in four months 0 not doing that again.

Currently using the tube.

But if they want people to be green - they have to make cycling in RUSH HOUR more flexible.
