Title: Automated announcements
Post by: 159jim on July 22, 2010, 16:20:03
I decided create this topic so people can discus train announcements at there local train station.
To give you a bit of info, I can name a few voices, they are:

Celia Drummond, Phil Sayer, Ruth, Sarah, Mike, Boofay, Charlotte and Glynn.

People wishing to post samples, they can (links only, Please!).

For more info, Please visit:

Thanks,
Jim.

Sarahs name is actually (apparently) Anne, and is a member of management at Atos Origin, the people who install her voice.

And i'm glad you have found the announcement site at jsphotography, as I am one of the contributors, and am glad someone finds the information of use to them!

Announcement recordings of mine can be found on my Freesound account at http://www.freesound.org/usersViewSingle.php?id=799700

You'll find a wealth of previous material on this subject on this forum, too: see http://www.firstgreatwestern.info/coffeeshop/index.php?topic=1715.0 and http://www.firstgreatwestern.info/coffeeshop/index.php?topic=6124.0 for example!

Oh no, pleeeeeeease don't yank Btline's chain and send him off on his ranting about how the only intelligible announcements on the railway system are voiced by Ph*l S*y*r... ;)

Hi, Louis94 - I've looked at your site and note that you're using a creative commons license that appears to be fairly specicific - a Creative Commons Sampling Plus 1.0 License, summariesd at http://creativecommons.org/licenses/sampling+/1.0/ .   It states " You are free to ... sample, mash-up, or otherwise creatively transform this work for commercial or noncommercial purposes. ...[etc] Under the following conditions ...  You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work)."

But who actually is the Author / Licensor to whom we must attribute?  At first glance I thought it would be yourself, but then thoughts of copyright came to my mind and I wondered if it is actually the company running the annoucement system, or the company who contracts Phil and all the other announcers. Or even Phil himself?

What about Julie? (the voice on SN and SE units, and some LU lines)

Hmm.

There seems to have been an element of duplication here, 159james?

I've now merged the topic you started today with the one you started two days ago, with exactly the same original post.

Please: don't start duplicate topics on this forum.

Thanks,

Chris.

Well techniquely it would be Phil/Celia, etc themselves, as they are the voices behind the speaker! But then i'd hope someone would be decent enough to endorse myself, as I have taken the time to record them!

What about Julie? (the voice on SN and SE units, and some LU lines)

and LM 350s!

You want an endorsement for recording something that may be subject to copyright? Have you sought permission from Ditra, SEMA, or other possible copyright holders?

Oh for goodness sake, these are announcements that play everyday at loads of stations; I hardly think Phil will be having sleepless nights - OMG someone might have my voice recording on a website!

There are far more pressing things to worry about!

 ::) ::) ::)

OFGS, OMG, I merely asked the questions.

I don't know the copyright situation, but I found it a bit rich of Louis94 hoping for endorsement, merely because he had recorded someone elses work.

Here's a teaser for you?  Does anyone know the identity of the automated voice on FGW Class 165 and 166's?  There's only 4 automated announcements, all concerning changing trains at Reading and referring to Thames Trains at the end, so they're rarely used these days - and of course they're about to be replaced by a new system, but I'm sure some of you have heard them?  Any ideas?

Hi, everyone ... someone had "flagged" me - "what about the copyright issues on these" and I (in turn) flagged it.

But this site isn't hosting copies of second generation sound recordings, so (thank goodness!) I don't have to start looking further into it to see if we're hosting material over which Phil, or Atos Origin, or First Great Western could claim copyright.

I (away from this forum) have a very large number of images online, and from time to time I come across one of them (or am directed to one of them) is some quite surprising places.   Asked ahead of time, I'm usually only too happy for them to be used; used without so much as a "may I", I'm rather less likely to be happy.   Same thing with sounds - I have friends and relatives who have had similar situations and it pays to ask / think ahead.

"Yes - Phil Sayer would be delighted to have a fanzine site ..."  ;D

Let's move on

... Changing trains at Reading .... Hmmm  ;)

Dunno about the 165/166s, but Croydon Tramlink's announcements are provided by BBC Newsreader Nicholas Owen.

Really!  ;D ;D ;D

EDIT: Have listened to YouTube, and it's definitely NOT Nick Owen. :'( :'(

SECOND EDIT: There are two Nick Owens - both work for the BBC. I assume it's the other one! ::) ::)

Sorry, but 4 different sources all say it's Nicholas Owen, what source do you have that says otherwise?

I'll EDIT as well! Changed 'Nick' to 'Nicholas'

The source I used was my ears and memory! But it could be the other Nick Owen.

You'll note I originally said Nicholas Owen, BBC Newsreader. I was not referring to Nick Owen, BBC Midlands Today presenter and former comfy sofa presenter with Anne Diamond.

Apologies for the confusion.  ;)

Nicholas Owen is a very keen railway enthusiast. I once had the pleasure of spending 6 hours or so in his company on a Central European equivalent of the Orient Express (The Majestic Imperator if I recall) from Prague. He was absolutely delighted that my (then) employer had invited him and Mrs Owen along.

Not me, no.  Although I did have the pleasure of working with him for a while.  Anyone?!?

On a vaguely related note, I did think it was great when I discovered that the lifts at Bristol Parkway have a broad Bristolian accent for the "doors closing", "platform level", "footbridge level" etc announcements. Were they recorded by the station staff?
