Title: A POSITIVE Daily Mail article about the railways!
Post by: Btline on August 13, 2010, 10:39:44
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/article-1299410/Ben-Fogle-takes-best-rail-trip-Britain-London-Penzance.html

Summed up by one of the comments: "How refreshing! A bright positive article describing a normal journey by rail!"

However, that's the only comment:

The DM (that's Daily Mail, not Devon Metro :P ) website guarantees a laugh every time! Whether it be exaggerations, or complete non stories!

What concerns me is that by visiting their website, or, heaven forfend, buying the Daily Fail, we are only encouraging them!  ;) ;D

The only time I have ever bought a copy of the Daily Wail was for my m-i-l, when she was staying with us once.  :P ::) ;D

Have to admit to reading it regularly during my teenage years (I'm better now!). Mother's newspaper of choice. Still is, but I now resist the urge to pick it up when visiting. I also resist when Mum says, "Have you seen this in the paper?" Arguing about immigration, house prices, the latest medical 'scare' etc whilst cooking sunday lunch is not my idea of fun.

The Mirror is higher on my list of must not read papers ;)

In view of the generally light-hearted tone of the posts on this topic, I've moved it here, to 'the lighter side'.

May I also offer a classic scene from 'Yes, Prime Minister', on the subject of 'Who reads the papers?':

The Mirror is another entertaining paper!

Unfortuantely, I have relatives that read the Daily Mail without taking a pinch of salt. Combined with a few pints, the rants that start can easily ruin a Sunday lunch. >:(

PS: I never buy the DM, just read the website when I want a laugh. This article, about Jonathan Ross' final BBC show got me chuckling because of the blatant over exaggeration in the quotes and the obvious anti licence fee comments. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1295554/Fans-fume-Jonathan-Ross-guests-BBC-staff-snap-farewell-seats.html

My mum reads the daily wail

I used to read the grauniad - I grew up and became a tax payer

I tend to the times and telegraph but will read the daily wail but giv myself the benefitnof the doubt that I don't believe it before checkingnother sources

Only periodical I pay to read these days (excepting rail related mags) is Private Eye.

Found this comment from Richard, London, 27/7/2009 after the mail article "I'm an ex rail worker, I left because the rail industry is a total shambles.
You only need to know these three simple facts for you to understand rail pricing -
1/ Trains can only have a limited number of carriages, because they have to fit existing platforms.
2/ You can only have one train on a stretch of track at a time - safety.
3/ So, the ONLY way to control overcrowding on popular services is to keep putting the price up for that service.
Get the picture ? They cannot handle more customers, unless you want to go from Plymouth to Penzance.Lots of jobs for the commuter there."Simples init or is it,Thoughts?

Worth looking up this old thread in light of today's sad news of the passing of Derek Fowlds. He got what was arguably the best punchline in all episodes of Yes, Prime Minister. RIP.
