Title: FGW info point phone numbers
Post by: 159jim on August 19, 2010, 21:10:02
Hi!

You know those Blue info points you get at most unstaffed FGW stations, and when you press them you hear a phone dialling then you hear some train info, what's the phone number?

Thanks,
Jim.

Dunno, but if it still has the key tone bleeps then you can record it and find out.

Well, as the first key tone dial appears to be 7 numbers, it is either a local call (ie no area code) or a closed network call.

Some mobile phones will make a call if played a key tone through the mouthpiece.

Question is: Why do you want to know the number for the origin of these automated announcements?

The number has been changed in the last few months or so, presumably over to a different system hence the change of voice. It used to be 0870 241 0415 and then the station's NLC. No idea what it is now.

Having this number stored on my phone was very useful for when I lived and caught the train from Worle and the info point there had a tendency to break down!

The voice of these help points has also changed to the same lady (Anne) who is currently at Paddington.

Was lucky as it changed just after i went on a mad recording session on the gunnislake branch, when i heard it could be changing!

Which stations have changed to Anne?

All of them!

The help points used to be maintained by Arriva Trains Wales, but is now maintained by the new CIS fitting company "Telenet".

I emailed FGW regarding the voice change and they replyed:

Quote
Thank your email of 29 June 2010 with regard to the automated help points at ex-Wessex stations. I can advise you that the help points were maintained by Arriva Trains Wales. This has recently changed to a company called Telenet.

I can advise you that any changes to the voices will be made by them, and they will make any amendments they deem necessary.

Any specific information on stations, or any changes to be made would be decided by Telenet, but not publicly advertised.

Is there any other TOCs that have these points?

Title: Re: FGW info point phone numbers

Is there any other TOCs that have these points?

Arriva Trains Wales have them, they use the same number as what FGW used, because ATW provided the service for FGW.

and also Southern have a similar thing, but its Phil/Celia and its per a platform, so they have 1 point on each platform with a different voice, its at most of their quieter stations including in London. They also play announcements too, so basically its a speaker, but on a wall and with a button to request information.

Louis

Cools. Does Southern have a number?

Cools. Does Southern have a number?

No Southerns help points dont ring up a number, its connected to the system itself. Abit like the Wessex and Arriva Trains Wales 'advanced' silver help points are. Although it only announces trains for the platform it is on.

Thanks for posting this.  Just tried the number and it certainly works (just need to type the 4 digit NLC into your phone keypad once the system has beeped at you).

I've just tried it as well!  :P

It doesn't have any details for Nailsea & Backwell (possibly as our information points aren't installed yet?), but I was able to discover that there are "no trains due in the next 99 minutes" at Melksham!

CfN.  ;) :D ;D

the 4 digit NLC

Please can some one explain?   Would this be like 5521 Farnborough Main and 7248 Bristol Temple Meads or am I getting my codes confused?

Title: Re: FGW info point phone numbers
Post by: Chris from Nailsea on September 04, 2010, 16:47:42
The four digit National Location Codes are available at http://deaves47.users.btopenworld.com/CRS/CRS0.htm

Quote
NLCs are used in an accounting context to identify individual assets, and were first used from 1 January 1968.  They are entirely separate to ELRs and PRIDE numbers (shown elsewhere on this site).  Additionally, these codes are also used by booking offices, albeit in a slightly truncated form.  Those locations which are stations generally have NLCs ending "00" (for example, Swindon is 333300).  Booking clerks drop the final two zeroes, and refer to Swindon as 3333.

So, Bristol Temple Meads is 3231 and Farnborough Main is 5521.

Hope this helps!

CfN.  ;)

It wont work for stations that dont have a help point installed which plays these announcements.

So will only work for stations which either have help points with the yellow button, or still have the old wessex help points.

This being the reason why Nailsea and Backwell wont work, same for Bristol Temple Meads, etc

Basically they are replacing the old wessex help points, but the wessex help point have not been removed yet.

Spotted it at Stonehouse the other week, with Anne announcing in it, aswell as the more advanced silver "ticking" one with Ruth announcing. Also rung up Pilning's help point. "There are no trains due to leave this platform in the next 99 minutes" If theres only on train a week in each direction, whats the point giving Pilning a help point?

Who knows! I guess there must be someone who would use it! once or twice a week!

Folks, can we please avoid the unnecessary use of the 'Quote' button when replying to a preceding post. 'Reply' will suffice unless you are quoting a post further up thread.

Thanks awfully,

Quote is fine, as long as you make the effort to delete the previously quoted items.

Indeed, quoting is particularly useful for those of with an active SMF Killfile script... ;)

I shouldn't imagine there are a great many forum users who are using an 'SMF Killfile script', whatever one of those is.

Oh, and does this SMF Killfile script delete words from posts as well?

Thanks,
Jim.

Title: Re: FGW info point phone numbers

As a back up just incase the screens fail, which they often do at Filton.

Also, passengers can contact an advisor on the help points, they can't on the screens! ::)

Something that really annoys me about NRE is that they publicise 0845 numbers for people to get train information when they are at smaller unstaffed stations, when these calls generally cost mobile users 25-35p per minute.  I'm please to hear the "Push for info" button is offering a connection to NRE which passengers do not have to pay for at last.

If you look up the NRE 0845 number on the 'Say No to 0870' website, it gives you a landline number to call, I believe - a Birmingham (0121) number?

The number I have in my phone (which seems to work) is 0121 634 2040.  Think I was given this number by someone at a TOC (possibly Southern).

I have only ever heard an announcement there once, and it was extremely quiet, turned down so not to annoy the nearby houses? and also the screen on Platform 2/3 is not readable most of the time. I'd rather have a ticking help point anyday over a screen!

Does anyone know if Filton Abbey Wood has any of the new white help points yet?

The old "ticking" ones:
