Title: Another open top bus to add to the First fleet?
Post by: Chris from Nailsea on August 21, 2010, 22:17:33
From the BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-11036547):

Quote
Glasgow bridge strike rips bus roof off

A double-decker bus has crashed into a rail bridge in the south side of Glasgow ripping off its roof.

The First Bus vehicle crashed into the structure in Cook Street at about 1420 BST on Thursday.

Police said the bus was not carrying any passengers at the time and the driver was uninjured.

A spokesman for Network Rail said an inspection had revealed that the bridge was undamaged and, subsequently, train services were not disrupted.

A rather neat job, judging by the picture from that BBC report:

Looks like a perfectly acceptable conversion for use by the various 'Open Top Bus Company' operators around the country!

How?

I mean I'm even conscious driving in and out of nailsea car park that one bump might take off my roof bars

Surely you know the height of your vehicle and most bridges have a height restriction posted on them

Words fail me

Yes

I know it happens - I just do not understand how

For reasons I won't go into i actually have a psv licence (as well as hgv and motorcycle) licence and one if the things impressed into you for psv and hgv is know the heightb of the vehicle you are driving

It's not rocket science

And its one of the reasons I'm arguing with the management company in port marine over my *refusal* to park in my parking space - it is not physically possible to get my vehicle into my space of all other spaces are occupied.  And I can reverse an arctic into a small small access if need be so I know what I'm talking about

Think I did that with no typos on e paddle

Just a case of probability.  There are many thousands of buses running around the country all day, every day, as there are lorries.  There are many low bridges.  Buses and lorries sometimes go where they shouldn't be due to roadworks and so on.  You'd still probably find that it's something that happens to only 0.01% of bus drivers throughout their careers, so it is very unlikely to happen.

Thanks for this input bignosemac,

First the drunk schoolbus driver seems to prove there is a double safety level on our roads.
The drink drive limit is 80mg, but this driver was almost 3 times over the limit at 97mg, which doesn't make sense ,Unless bus drivers are covered by the Transport & Works Act. Double Safety standards?

Second, the thisislondon link involved a rail replacement bus, as passengers had train tickets, would the RSSB get involved?

The limit is either 35μg per 100ml of breath, 80mg per 100ml of blood or 107mg per 100ml of urine.  I think the 97mg is meant to read 97μg (i.e. micrograms).

I'm not so sure:

The Transport & Works act effects Train Crews, Signallers, in fact ANYBODY working on the railway with a Safety Critical job.

It also applies to Boat skippers, so COULD it apply to PSV drivers,

The T&W act has a drink limit of 35mg as opposed to 80mg.
