Title: A blast from the past. Post by: JayMac on June 23, 2011, 05:02:24 These links to the BBC archive may well have been posted previously here in the Coffee Shop but I thought I'd post them again in a new topic, as the programmes are well worth a second view (or first, if you've not seen them before).
The BBC archive has a selection of great rail related programmes, available online, providing a wonderful historic document of the UK's railways. http://www.bbc.co.uk/archive/steamtrains/ Particular favourites of mine are The Great Railway Cavalcade (http://www.bbc.co.uk/archive/steamtrains/7305.shtml) from 1980, celebrating the 150th anniversary of the worlds first city to city passenger service, and Michael Palin's Confessions of a Train Spotter (http://www.bbc.co.uk/archive/steamtrains/7306.shtml), again from 1980, documenting his journey from London to Kyle of Lochalsh. Enjoy! ;) Feel free to post links to programmes or video clips that you've also discovered in the public domain online. Stick to the theme of 'A blast from the past' though.... EDIT: Now what was the name of that week long series of live broadcasts from across the rail network that the BBC did in the mid 80's? BBC Breakfast time did a one off program in the 80s that featured the Vale of Rheidol Railway, Settle to Carlisle and Fort William to Mallaig. It would be great if these programs were available in archive somewhere.

Previously only clips were available on youtube. Now though you can watch all five episodes in their entirety. It's a fascinating insight into the autumn years of British Rail. Showing the day-to-day life of the BR Eastern Region, centered on York. Here's the link to episode 1.
