Title: Looking at forum demographics (a.k.a. "How old are you?")
Post by: grahame on November 04, 2007, 18:52:39
There are some important issues in Rail User Group circles in relation to the demographic mix of the people who get involved, and whether they represent the people who use of want to use the service.

Can I ask everyone reading this thread (yes, YOU!) to answer the poll above to indicate your age group?  At this stage, I can only guess at the outcome. If it shows we have a good mix, it adds weight to our arguments, and if it shows up a distortion from a typical cross-section, we can look at how we're not reaching certain groups.  Thanks!

P.S.  This is anonymous / neither I nor any of the moderators can see how you vote!

22! A bit worrying that my age could have been up to 40, and still be in the same category, though! ;)

Thanks to all the people who have ALREADY voted in the first 12 hours or so - this is turning out to be really useful;  please - everyone add in your vote too. I'm very happy for you to add a post as many have been doing, but the "undeclared" votes are hugely useful too.

Running for a week ... and I have locked voting and will write up a separate thread with comments / conclusions .... most interesting, if rather what I had anticipated!

Why have you focused your attention on everyone's age? The majority of rail passengers - who really are under-represented in User Groups - are women.

1. Because I already have much better data available to me on that

2. Because the numbers of men and women travelling on any particular is much more in propotion to the the number of men and women in the population as a whole than the propotion of 21-40 year olds to 61 and overs.

3. Because the differences in typical travelling habits are not so great, men v women to working v retired.
